Sherrie Elizabeth Gatenby, age 68, daughter of Edythe & Thomas Gatenby, died tragically in a house fire on June 25, 2021. She is survived by her three children Michelle, Matthew, and Melanie, her sisters Lynda and Brenda, her brother Steven, her grandchildren Zachary, Riley, Austin, Alex, Daniel, Logan, Layla, and Devyn, her great grandchildren Kailer, Brooke, and Sarah, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was an exceptional pastry chef who loved to make treats for her family and taught her daughter Melanie all of her secrets, (with which Melanie added her own unique spin to make questionable cake creations. Sherrie’s eye rolls will be forever etched in our minds). Her butter tarts and cheesecakes were legendary. She often had to chase Matthew out of the kitchen so he wouldn’t eat them all before guests arrived.
An empath and creative spirit, she expressed herself through drawing, painting, singing and writing poetry. Michelle drove her crazy as a child asking for endless drawings of horsies. She delighted in doing art projects with her grandchildren and encouraged them to express themselves through drawing and painting. She was soproud of them and loved every minute she could spend with them.
Her love for animals was evident in her care for her pets, even losing her life trying to save them. Her dogs Freya and Gaby, four tiny puppies and her cat are with her in heaven.
She always went out of her way to care for and help anyone that needed her. There were often total strangers at family dinners as she never wanted anyone to be alone at the holidays. She would cook meals for those in need and made sure that nobody went hungry. She didn’t have a lot, but she would donate whatever she could to give small comfort to anyone that needed it. She was a best friend and confidant to her neighbour George, providing an ear and sharing her amazing energy to lift his spirits and care for him. He commented that he will never find another person as beautiful and kind, and even ten people could not replace her.
Our lives will never be the same, we all miss her terribly and cherish the memories we have.
Visitation will be held at Morris Funeral Chapel, 4 Division Street, Bowmanville on Friday, July 2, 2021 from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. The visitation period from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. will be a private family visitation.
