Born September 25, 1928 in Warsaw, Poland, Ryszard (Richard) Ladyslaw Bojankiewicz and family escaped occupied Poland at the beginning of WW2; they settled permanently in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, UK. Ryszard attended Trent College public school in Nottingham and later obtained a medical degree from the University of Sheffield in 1952. In 1956 he joined the Medical Branch of Royal Air Force (RAF), becoming a Flight Lieutenant. Here he met a Latvian girl, Rasma Maneks, working as a nurse in the same RAF hospital; they were married in 1958. After leaving the RAF, Ryszard practiced tropical medicine in Africa (Malawi, then called Nyasaland – 1958 to 1964) and the Bahamas (Nassau, 1965 – 1967). In 1967, he moved to Welland, Canada (near Niagara Falls) where he was an anesthesiologist at the Welland County General Hospital in addition to having a large family practice. Retiring from medicine in 1999, Ryszard moved to Walker Lake in the Huntsville, Muskoka area. Here he enjoyed full time what he loved the most in life: wilderness, forests, lakes, animals, birds and outdoor activities, including canoeing, hiking, boating, snowshoeing and skiing. Rasma, his first wife, passed away in 2010. Traveling to Peru, he met Silvia Rosa Chiriboga Mendoza; they were married in 2011 in Lima. In his later years, Ryszard continued to enjoy life at Walker Lake, interspersed with several ambitious long term visits to Peru. He passed away peacefully on August 26, 2021 at the Algonquin Grace Hospice in Huntsville, surrounded by family and close friends.
Ryszard’s gentleness, friendliness and kindness, as well as his insightful observations and dry sense of humour, will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Silvia, as well as by his son, Richard Bojankiewicz and two granddaughters, Julia Bojankiewicz and Nicole Bojankiewicz.“
