Roy Charles Ficken

Roy Charles Ficken passed peacefully away on November 17, 2021 at the age of 77, in the Palliative Care Unit at the Miller Centre. He leaves behind to remember him and to mourn, his wife Sylvia (nee Quinton); sons David (Kim), Terry (Jennifer) and Daniel (Laura), and six grandchildren, Jenna, Kayleigh and Michael, Jessica and Ben, and Evan; his brother Peter in London, England, and sisters-in-law Bronwin Ficken (Dover, England), and Louise Osborne (Chelsea, Quebec); brothers-in-law Joliffe Quinton (Shoal Harbour) and Terry Quinton (Judy) (Pasadena); nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Ficken, Katherine Ficken and Richard Ficken, Brian Quinton, Anne Quinton, Bruce Quinton, Evelyn Osborne, and their families; and special friends and relatives. Roy was pre-deceased by his father and mother, Henry and Ellen Ficken (London, England) and his brother David (Dover, England).
Roy was born and grew up in London, England. After spending time at art college in Carlisle, and completing a few years studying Scientific Photography in London, he immigrated to Newfoundland in 1968 to work for many years at Memorial University’s biology department. He has had many diverse interests over the years, including a keen interest in history and the arts, photography and photographing medieval carvings. Roy was a talented artist, sculptor, potter and wood carver, and a lifelong student of art.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation from Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Saturday, November 20, 2021 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Sunday, November 21, 2021 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Private family inurnment to take place on Monday, November 22, 2021 at 10 a.m. from St. John the Evangelist Anglican Cemetery, Topsail.
