Obituary
Rose Lamie
North Sydney
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Rose Lamie (née Murphy). Our mother died peacefully at home surrounded by her children and loving caregivers on Thursday, April 15, 2021. She was born in North Sydney on July 27, 1919 and lived a full life for 101 years. She was a daughter of the late John and Helen (Parsons) Murphy.
Up until the last several years, she enjoyed a very active, independent life. It was not unusual for her to jump on the minibus to visit her sister and her children in Halifax. She loved shopping, going out to restaurants, had a lovely sense of style, and would never miss an appointment with her hairdresser, Bill. However, she had three main loves: her granddaughter, playing bridge, and her special relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Gran Rose, as she was called by her only grandchild, Emma (Rose), shared endless amounts of time together and a very special connection. In fact, EMMA was the love of her life! Gran Rose excelled at being a grandmother; enthusiastically attending every birthday, graduation, school play, concert and ballet recital. It was heartwarming to witness such true, unconditional love.
An avid bridge player, Mum was often a member of several clubs at the same time and played duplicate bridge until a few years before her death. In her nineties, she went to Outpatients for a health emergency. After waiting some time, she informed the nurse that she would return the next day because she had to join her bridge club — they didn’t have a “fourth”!
Mum had a deep and abiding faith in the Blessed Virgin Mary, often talking to her as one might to a dear friend. She had a favourite statue of Our Lady that she liked to keep near so that she could light a candle and offer some flowers. Her rosary was never far from her hand.
Mum is survived by her sister, Amelia MacNeil, Dartmouth, her 3 daughters, Patricia Lamie, Toronto, Mary Elizabeth Lamie (Allan Buchanan), Halifax, Therese Lamie, Halifax, her granddaughter, Emma Buchanan, Ottawa, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh Lamie, North Sydney, and her brothers, Frank, St. John’s, Jack, New York, William (Bill), Sydney, Donald (Don), North Sydney, Cyril, Acton, Mass., and 2 infant sisters, Therese and Violet, North Sydney.
The family thanks Mum’s long term caregiver, Christa Gullage (who is now considered family), for her tireless, dedicated, compassionate, loving care of our mother. Christa put together an amazing, devoted team of caregivers: Elva, Lisa, Karen, and Brenda who were both professional and caring and showered Mum with love and respect. Special mention to Betty Lou Gullage, who Mum came to love and cherish as her best friend.
And, long before there were caregivers, there were neighbours and dear friends. Rannie Gillis and Catherine Gillis were Mum’s second family. They provided her with incredible support, tirelessly taking her for groceries and to appointments, making sure she was not alone on holidays or special occasions, looking after the house when Mum was away and keeping us up to date on any change in Mum’s health. Mum loved them and we cannot thank them enough!
We would also like to acknowledge Mum’s dear friends, Bernadette MacNeil and Sally Ryan. There were many others who were always available to help Mum.
We would also like to thank Dr. Stephanie Langley for her professional care and her willingness to go that extra mile. Finally, the services provided by the VON were exceptional!
We have come to realize that it takes a village to care for an aging parent and our village was amazing!
A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers (in fact, we are not in a position to accept them), donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, the North Sydney Food Bank, or a charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com .
