NICHOLSON, Rod – Passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 8th in his 86th year, after a long courageous battle with cancer that never took away his passion for working in his favourite spot “The Shop”. He was a devoted family man, the beloved husband of Faye and a hero to his late son Aubrey (1984) and his daughter Lori, and to his grandchildren Bradley, Tessla, Rhyder, Whayland and great-grandchildren Jemma and Harland. Rod is predeceased by his parents Donald and Kathleen Nicholson, his brothers Orland (survived by Barb), Gordon (survived by Marilyn), Morley (survived by Joan). Survived by his brother Sherman (Shirley) and brother-in-law’s Grenville (Pat), sister-in-law’s Joan (Ernie), and Darlene (John). He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews, especially for playing Crokinole.
After Rod and Faye’s marriage in 1958, they moved to Toronto for 18 years where he worked at Lever Brothers, Wilson’s Ginger Ale, and Royal Crown Cola. He then became the supervisor at Orange Crush, during which time he introduced one of his men, Ernie, to Faye’s sister Joan, and what a life they have had together since. After the closing of Orange Crush one of the men, Bob, who worked with Rod, together they took over the franchise for Mac’s Milk. Together Bob and Rod bought 4 trucks and they delivered pop to all over southern Ontario. While doing this they were buying old homes to remodel and re-sell them. In 1976, Rod and Faye decided to move back to Glenarm and bought vacant farmland next to his brother Orland. At this time Rod decided to go to night school to build a model of our new home to perfection from plans. After their move to Glenarm he followed his passion and started his own business called “Nicholson Carpentry”. He started small and no job was too small, which started him well into his career and expanded into building homes, renovations and remodeling. Rod hired many employees to name a few, Graydon, Kevin, Bob, Morley and Aubrey, and more when needed. He also took on co-op students for 3 years from Fenelon High School to teach them carpentry and at night taught adults to build their own dream projects under his supervision. In his later years when he should have been retired, he started back in his “shop” doing smaller projects like Victorian screen doors, and custom furniture. Rod was a valued community man, he was very involved with the Glenarm Church and Cemetery Board, and a proud member of the Orange Lodge.
A visitation will take place at the Stoddart Funeral Home, 24 Mill Street, Lindsay on Friday, November 12th from 2:00 – 4:00p.m. & 6:00 until 8:00p.m. and Saturday, November 13th from 1:00p.m. until time of funeral service at 2:00p.m. Interment will follow at Glenarm Cemetery.
