Obituary of Robert Gerard MacGillivray
Robert Gerard MacGillivray – age 66 of Thorburn, N.S. passed away on February 9, 2021 at the
Maritime Odd Fellows Home, Pictou with his loving best friend by his side.
Born March 26, 1954 in New Glasgow he was a son of the late Colin Ronald MacGillivray and Anna
Josephine (Mason) MacGillivray.
Robert was employed with Sobeys for 38 years as a store produce manager working in all Pictou County
and Antigonish stores. Robert took pride in his product often buying in season from local growers. Off
to work early, his produce displays sold the product. Robert took an interest in his customers, knowing
what they would look for, and took pleasure making and delivering a last-minute fruit basket to the
Aberdeen Hospital.
Robert was a caring, gentle man with a quick-witted edge who dearly loved his family. Robert’s
favourite place was the Back Shore at Big Island, no amount of time there will ever be enough.
Robert required care for many years, he was blessed to meet Mary Jane MacKenzie. Over the last five
years Mary Jane was Robert’s caregiver and advocate, Robert came first, always before herself. Each
day Robert looked for his Best Friend, once ready they would hit the road to Big Island, a stop for a bite,
the DeCoste, his nephew Colin’s hockey games and many medical trips. Mary Jane, we are so grateful
for everything you have done for our Dad and for how happy you made him.
Robert is survived by his children Angelique Connelly and James MacGillivray; grandchildren Devon,
Anthony and McKenna Connelly and Cameron MacGillivray; sister Catherine Scott; brother Donald (Gina
Fagan) MacGillivray; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Caroline Worthen; brother-in-law Harold
(Geraldine) Fraser.
He was predeceased by his wife Lynn (Fraser), brothers John, Billy and brother-in-law Al Scott.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held in the Thorburn Cemetery at a later date.
