Obituary of Robert Benvie MacKinnon
It is with great sadness that the family of Robert (Bob) Benvie MacKinnon announces his passing after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease, on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at the age of 76 years.
Robert was born on July 18, 1945 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. As a young lad of 18 years he left home to fulfill his dream of becoming a policeman. Shortly thereafter he established his roots in Newfoundland and Labrador where from 1965 to 2003, he proudly served the people of Newfoundland and Labrador as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). All who knew Robert remember him as a man that was larger than life, had a heart of gold, passionate about the outdoors, and most notably a great storyteller and consummate joke teller.
Robert will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Linda; three children Nadine (John), Dana (Gerry), and Joe (Terri); six grandchildren Rachel, Hudson, Olivia, Laura, Kira and Kyla; brother Don (Carol Ann); sisters Leslie (Randy) and Isabelle; bothers-in-law Wilfred (Alicia), Dwight (Maxine), Scottie (Cathy), Paul (Joanne), George (Mary), Jim (Diane), Dave (Bernice), Frank (Shirley); sisters-in-law Vera and Lois. Robert was preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Bridget; parents-in-law Cecily and Joe; twin brother Jim; brother Gerald; sister Diane; brother-in-law Bob; sisters-in-law Betty and Lorraine; nephew Joshua; also brother-in-law David Henderson (Stellarton)
The family would like to thank Dr. Roy Lilly for providing an amazing level of care for Robert and for going above and beyond to support the family.
Cremation has taken place and a ceremony will be held at a later date according to current COVID-19 restrictions. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Robert to the Parkinson’s Society of Newfoundland & Labrador or the charity of one’s choice.
