Robert Reiner
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert, on Friday, December 17, 2021, at the age of 96. Robi was the son of the late Béla and the late Jolan Reiner. Beloved husband of Miriam Reiner for 60 years. Adoring father and father-in-law of Dan and Karine Reiner. Best “papa” of Emma Reiner, the greatest love of his life. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Vera Kellner and the late George Kellner. Fond brother-in-law of Judith Avital and the late Ron Avital. Cherished uncle of Ronit Kellner, Ben and Karen Kellner; and loving great-uncle of Julie Klein, the late Matthew Klein, Alexandra Kellner, Jason Kellner, Udi Avital, and Osnat Avital.
Robi was born in Nyíregyháza, Hungary on March 21, 1925. During the Holocaust, he was deported to the Bustyaháza forced labour camp, where he escaped and then evaded capture for months until the end of the war. After the Hungarian Revolution, Robi joined his sister Vera in Israel in 1956 where he later met and married his wife, Miriam. In 1961, Robi moved to Montreal with his family and started working as a shipping clerk at Steinberg’s distribution centre, whose owner, Mr. Sam, had sponsored the family’s immigration to Canada. Robi worked at Steinberg’s for twenty-seven years until his retirement.
Robi had a heart of gold. He valued simplicity and devoted himself to his family. He was so proud of their accomplishments and cherished staying in touch with relatives and friends across Canada, the United States, Australia, Sweden, Hungary, and Israel. Robi will be remembered for his loving kindness, thoughtfulness, humility, and candor. He will be dearly missed, and his memory is a blessing to everyone who knew and loved him.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the entire staff of the CHUM and Mt. Sinai Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit for their excellent and dignified care.
A private graveside service will be held on Monday, December 20, 2021. Shiva will also be private.
