Robert James Stone
June 05, 1927 – July 04, 2021
It’s with heavy hearts that we share that Robert (Bob) James Stone, 94, passed away July 04, 2021 at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Bob was born June 5, 1927 to Percy and Elizabeth (Bittle) Stone in Toronto, Ontario. In 1947, Bob started his lifetime career in the retail fashion industry with the Hudson Bay Company (HBC). Over the next 12 years, he worked for HBC in Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary, North Bay and Edmonton. In the 1960’s, he established his own women’s fashion store (Robert Stone Fashions) at Oak Queen Mall in Oakville. Future expansion included a 2nd Robert Stone Fashions in Oakville, as well as stores in Mississauga, Barrie, Galt and, finally, Hamilton.
Bob had a strong sense of community and service. In 1952, he went into the Reserve Army in Calgary and took a Commission as a Lieutenant in the Ordinance Corps. He belonged to the Rotary Club of Oakville for 30 years, serving in many capacities, including President. He was a member of St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Oakville since 1964, where he held many positions, including People’s Warden and President of the Garden Guild. For his devotion and service to the church, Bob was a Recipient of the Order of Niagara.
Bob enjoyed spending time with his many friends, particularly the Friday Oakville Boys Coffee Club, and playing bridge in the Probus Bridge Club. He had a passion for gardening, loved to travel, and enjoyed a good day’s fishing. For decades, his lovebird, Sunshine, could be found perched on Bob’s shoulder while he went about his chores.
Bob is survived by his loving wife Jo-Anne of 36 years; daughters Carolee (Frank) Wynia and Leslie Sherman, son Geoff (Lily) Stone; stepdaughters Deborah (Eddy) Morgan, Melanie (Charlie) Neilson, and Michele (David) Farris; grandchildren (Christopher, Samantha, Lindsay, Jessica, Kellie, Sean, Tanya, Lucas, Ryan, Connor, Taylor, Morgan); and 11 adorable great-grandchildren. The family is forever indebted to Lilibeth Inocenio, Bob’s personal caregiver and cherished friend, for greatly improving his quality of life these past 5 years.
Arrangements are being handled by Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home. Cremation has already taken place and Bob’s ashes will be added to the memorial gardens at St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Oakville during a private family service. For those who wish, donations in memory of Bob to St. Jude’s Anglican Church would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
