It is with great sadness that the family of Robert James Stevens, 83 of Bridgewater announces his peaceful passing, due to complications from pneumonia, on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.
Born in Lunenburg on June 11, 1938, Robert was the son of the late Harold and Muriel (Hiltz) Stevens. Robert spent many happy childhood years exploring the woods and shoreline of his home community, of Second Peninsula, often in the company of his cousins Arthur Dauphinee and Murray Stevens. The Three Musketeers, as they were fondly known, could be found racing model sailboats down in the cove, building forts in the woods, or visiting with their many cousins up and down the road. The relationships he forged during his childhood and youth remained close throughout his entire life. As adults any get togethers were an excuse to relive the fun times they all shared.
Robert received his early education in a one room schoolhouse in Second Peninsula and then went on to further his studies at the Lunenburg Academy where he excelled in Math. He started his working career with Gordon H. Marshall Chartered Accountants in Halifax and then decided to join his father in the family sail making business on 2nd Peninsula until his retirement in 1985. Robert was instrumental in assisting his daughter Michele in establishing the 4th generation of sail makers as Michele Stevens Sailloft in the original building where Randolph Stevens began his family’s sail making legacy.
An active volunteer within his community, Robert served at the South Shore Library and South Shore Regional Hospital for over 25 years, was treasurer and board member of the Long Lake Baptist Youth Camp; volunteered his time at the Mahone Bay Nursing Home and over the years was a member of the United Baptist Church, Mahone Bay where he served as a former deacon, choir member and with the Men’s Brotherhood and a Charter Member of Mahone Bay Area Lions Club. After moving to Bridgewater he was a member of the Bridgewater Baptist Church.
Robert’s love of life, family and friends and the community at large were so important to him. His quiet courage, strength of spirit will be carried forward by those who knew and loved him. He was the kindest and nicest man and we are all richer by having known him. He was a true ”gentle” gentleman.
Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Jane (Carter); daughters, Susanne (Bill) Roy, Ogden, Guysborough County; Kathryn (John) Hanson, Saint John, NB; and Michele Stevens (Al Mosher) Second Peninsula; grandchildren, Steven (Shannon), Stephanie (Nolan), Karen (Nick) and Mark and great grandson, Braeden and a brother, Andrew of Toronto.
The family would like to thank the staff on the Medical Unit at the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital and Dr. John Jenkins for their compassionate care and kindness to our family during Robert’s illness.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A memorial service for Robert will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bridgewater Baptist Church, Bridgewater. Rev. Dr. Aaron Kenny officiating. Interment will be at Second Peninsula Cemetery, Second Peninsula.
