Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Simanton (Grandpa Bob) of High River Alberta Bob passed away peacefully on Friday November 12th in Calgary at the age of 84. He is mourned by his Wife of 60 years Edie Simanton, Daughter Brenda Weber, Son-in-law Kevin Nashiem, Daughter-in-law Krista (Travis) Simanton, and five Grandchildren Tyson, Shelby (Jesse), Carly, Jake and Luke. Also left to mourn his passing are his Brothers and Sister Ron (Sarah) Simanton, Shirley (Richard) Walters, Vern (Val) Simanton, Ray (Ann) Simanton, and Brother-in-law Arnie White as well as numerous family and friends. He is predeceased by his Son Dave Simanton and Parents Ed and Hazel Simanton.
Bob was born on the farm near Nemoskam, Alberta on October 1, 1937. He met the love of his life in Drumhelle, Alberta while working at Stedmans. After marrying they bought a home in Calgary where they raised their two children. Bob worked for Safeway for 7 years before taking a role with Calgary Co-op which soon moved him into being Grocery Manager and then on to Centre Manager. He enjoyed a career with Calgary Co-op that lasted 28 years before he retired. One of his proudest accomplishments while working for them was “becoming a Centre Manager and training young people to become department Managers and some Centre Managers”. Bob also enjoyed the role of Santa Claus for the Calgary Co-op Christmas parties. He loved children and would sit for hours meeting all of the kids and making their experience talking to Santa a special one. Bob was even featured in the Christmas flyers in his Santa outfit complete with the twinkle in his eye.
After retiring at age 55 he and Edie moved on to their next adventure. They managed a campground in the Kananaskis in the summer months and travelled South to warmer climates in the Winter. Bob made friends wherever he went and enjoyed times spent with friends and family. Bob’s other love besides his family and camping was animals. He has had horses (Brownie, Slippers, Goldie, Ginger and Sunshine) and dogs (Scamp and Tiger and later his “little friend” Belle) to name a few. Bob was also a familiar face at hockey games and events participated by his Grandchildren he loved to cheer them on and could be heard from time to time questioning a ref over a call. While living in Calgary he enjoyed “playing golf with four buddies once a week and then curling once a week for over twenty years”. He also enjoyed “camping in the summer with a group of friends”.
Bob was a genuine, honest, and caring person who enjoyed meeting people. He especially enjoyed the time spent at Seasons Retirement Centre, although brief, and had enjoyed the live music there for years. When asked If he could live his life over again what would he do and his answer was “live my life the same way”. Positive to the end he is a role model for many on how to live your best life. We will miss you Bob, Dad, Grandpa Bob.
