It is with a heavy heart, the Doucas family announce that our mother, Rita Doucas, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Dec 13th, 2021. She was 89 yrs. old. Rita lived life on her own terms and was a woman way ahead of her time. Born in 1932 in Valvasone Italy, and at 2 years old her family moved to the town of Creighton Mine, outside Sudbury, Ontario where her father operated Inco Nickel Mine. There, she spent her childhood years with a voracious appetite for reading and learning and found her passion in music. At 22 years of age, she received her Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music Associate Diploma (ARCT), the highest academic standings awarded by The RCM Certificate Program, and began her lifelong love of teaching piano to young students.
It was not long after that she met her future husband, Takis, and after a whirlwind romance they were married just 3 weeks later. Their love resulted in four children and she put her heart and soul into being a loving, supportive wife while raising the children to be happy and independent.
She returned to school to get her French degree to support her youngest son in completing his French immersion studies. She chauffeured all four kids to their numerous sport and recreational competitions. Over and above that, her baking was legendary in the neighborhood, especially her pies and chocolate chips cookies.
Rita was a force of nature! She retired after 40 years of teaching piano and decided to help her husband run his business. Rita always found a reason to laugh, even through difficult times. Her love, strength, kindness and commitment to family and friends knew no bounds.
Rita is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, Takis Doucas, and her son Alexander Doucas. Rita is survived by her son, Christopher Doucas (spouse Robin Jones), and her daughters,
Anna – Marie Doucas (spouse Clive Tilley) and Natasha Doucas (spouse Robert Mooy), along with her grandson Maxime Doucas-Mooy.
There will be no funeral arrangements at this time, however a virtual Celebration of Life ceremony will be held January 21 at 4pm PT (link to be provided closer to the date).
Rita spent the last years in Yaletown House due to her dementia. The family of Rita Doucas wishes to thank Yaletown House and all the nurses and caregivers for their loving care and kind support for the past 6 years. We are grateful for their many programs, most notably the Horticulture (garden), spiritual, and music therapy programs that Rita enjoyed the most.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to Yaletown House Foundation to support these programs that are always in need of financial support. www.yaletown.org/donate/
