Obituary for
Philip Richard Pinkney
Pinkney, Philip Richard – Age 84, Lower Onslow. It is with broken hearts and great sadness that the family of Philip Richard Pinkney announces his passing on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the age of 84. Phil died peacefully at home with his beloved Linda by his side.
Phil was born on May 24, 1937 in South Ohio, Yarmouth County – the place where his love affair with horses began at a young age. He started out with draft horses while helping his family on their farm. Phil and his brother, Dave would harness anything with four legs and have competitive races in the yard.
He moved to Truro when he was fifteen and went to work with Belbo Gould in his stable of eight Standardbreds. This is where his love affair grew into a full-blown passion. He learned the basics and worked his way to the top. From there, he grew his own name and stable with the likes of Captain Conte, Dunachton Gale, Deep Finesse, Force Ore Finesse, Rev Your Engine and many more amazing horses.
Phil was named Canada’s Top Horseman, won an O’Brien Award, two Gold Cup and Saucers and the hearts of many. He had over 5,500 drives, 1,654 wins, a UDSR of 0.420 and made over 2.314 million in earnings! His favourite part of harness racing was Winning and teaching the next generation of horseman.
If you asked a hundred people who Phil Pinkney was, they would all give you the same answer; a gentleman, an outstanding horseman, a great friend, but ultimately a racing Legend! The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Phil. He loved going into the woods to hunt with his buddies, he loved fishing with his sons and he loved to watch and bet on harness races with Linda.
Phil is survived by his beloved Linda Hall; he was a proud father to Brian (Colleen) Pinkney, Dale (Jackie) Pinkney, Keith (Christa) Driscoll; grandchildren, Sarah, Danielle, Suzie, Angel, Michael and Ellie; great grandchildren, Carter, Lily and Rylie; wonderful family, his racing family and numerous beautiful friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kirk and Augusta Pinkney; brothers, Arthur, David (Lorraine) Pinkney; sister, Sally (Brian) Kempton; half-brother, John (Grace) Cann; half-sisters, Elma Trask, Norma (Joe) Brittain and June Ryerson.
We would like to thank the caregivers at VON and all our family and friends for their ongoing care and support during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Phil’s name may be made to VON or charity of choice. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, November 20th from 1-4pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Lyle Carter will be speaking at 2pm followed by longtime friend, Brent MacGrath. COVID-19 restrictions in place. Proof of full vaccination with ID required.
