What a blessed life. Pauline Wilcox (nee Crease) passed away with grace on October 4, 2021 at the age of 96. She left behind a legacy of five children: Glenn, Rabia Anne, Kathy, Nadine and Joanne, who to this day, still love being together even though they are scattered across North America. She has 10 Grandchildren: Seth, Jeremy, Meeka, Tem, Jesse, Melissa, Travis, Talynn, Amanda and Blake. Each had a wonderful connection with her from birth and as they grew into adults. She also has 10 Great Grandchildren: Will, Hazel, Miles, Brett, Sophia, Kaydence, Harlow, Rylan, Kaelyn and Sadie. She was predeceased by her husband Jack (John) Wilcox 1927-2011.
Born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Pauline in her early years was a skier, a skater, a ballerina, a swimmer, a badminton and tennis player, a tomboy and a great friend who loved to go to beaches and dances in town, and at the Shore Club in Hubbards. She travelled all over the east coast by train for the Red Cross to collect blood for the war effort. Then she met Jack, a Dartmouth boy, at a dance. Because of their love, a family with such affection for each other was created.
Pauline had different jobs in houseware department stores over the years, but as her children started their own families, she would put aside everything to travel to them throughout North America. She would support and provide guidance to give our young families a successful beginning. A sacrifice which was appreciated by all.
Later in life, she and Jack had the wonderful opportunity to live in the Bahamas for a few years. Even though Pauline and Jack decided not to live together anymore upon returning to Canada, they became closer than ever and would be on the phone to each other multiple times a week just to check in.
Once her children were well on their way with their families, she provided homecare work for seniors in need around the Ottawa area. She worked tirelessly at the Miller’s Over, a non-profit restaurant operated by a group of senior volunteers. She led a life of service to others.
A few years after Jack passed, Pauline began her journey with Alzheimer’s. She moved to BC where three of her five children now live. She would often ask for Jack as well as her Dad, Cliff Crease (of the ship MacKay-Bennet – tied forever to Titanic’s Unknown Child) and her mother Merle (nee Hunter). We are sure she is with them now and having a great chat.
Something of note: Glenn, Rabia, Kathy, and Joanne all travelled to Nadine’s near Trail, BC from many miles away and stayed together from September 19th to the 24th at our mother’s request. We had picnics with her every day on the front lawn of her long-term care facility. We were later joined by her eldest grandsons Seth and Jeremy. Laughs and tears were shared. She ate lobster and dark chocolate with abandon. After we left, she started to decline. Rabia and Nadine stayed with her in her final moments. We are all joyful she was able to choose her final bow.
We would like to thank the Home Care workers who assisted her for many years, and to the staff at Rose Wood Village, Trail BC for their care and compassion. Donations in Pauline’s memory can be made to Wise Generosity, created in her honour through her son’s medical practice which allowed her to enjoy her continued health and vitality throughout her 96 years.
