Patricia Munro
Captation des rituels
With deep sadness we announce that on June 23rd, 2021, Patricia Munro Conway, retired Vanier College English Department professor, passed away at the Floralies Residence in Lachine, where she had been living since February 2020.
Pat was born in Scotland to Alexander and Janet Munro. When she was nine, the family moved to Canada. She did Honours English at the University of Toronto and went on to earn a Master of Arts degree. In 1970 she began her career at Vanier College and for the next several decades devoted herself to teaching English literature and language. She was also the author of several well-received and widely used texts on the teaching of English as a second language. She coordinated the department for a time and served on important departmental and college committees. As well, she often made herself available as a mentor to newly-hired staff. In brief, Pat was the one to talk to if you needed to know how things worked in the college or how to work effectively with colleagues whose opinions on issues were often sharply divided. And she knew how to laugh at things and how to make you laugh too
Pat also travelled to far-away places. In 1979, she was one of the first Canadians to go to China after the Cultural Revolution, under the auspices of the Canadian government, to teach English at Dalian for a year. In 1993 she spent three months travelling in India. Her story about her travels, “A Woman, Alone, in India?” was published in a Canadian magazine.
Unfortunately, ill health obliged Pat to go on sick leave in 1998 and, in fact, she was never able to return to work. Fortunately, though, she discovered she had a talent for jewellery-making; many of her friends and former colleagues who are lucky enough to own one or more of Pat’s creations would attest to her skill.
Pat was pre-deceased by her ex-husband Abbott and her sister Eileen Barton (Owen). She is survived by her daughter Allison, son-in-law Kevin, and their three daughters Morgan, Paige, and Ella.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on Thursday, July 22nd 2021 from 1 PM to 2 PM at the Urgel Bourgie/Athos chapel close to Vanier College (3955, chemin Côte-de-Liesse, Ville St-Laurent, H4N 2N6). For those who are unable to attend in person, the service will be viewable live online, and the recording will be available shortly thereafter.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Pat’s name to the charity of your choice.
