Obituary
Patrick (Pat) Boulanger, husband of Shirley Boulanger, passed away peacefully on December 9th, 2021 at home.
Pat was born on September 9, 1936 in St. Cecile, Quebec; son to the late Romeo and Denise Boulanger, and adoptive parents Donat and Alberta Boulanger. He was pre-deceased by his brother Guy Boulanger and his sisters Brigitte Trépanier and Aline LeBeau. Pat is survived by his brothers Denis Boulanger (Julie) and Luc Boulanger (Claudette) and his sister Claudette Dufour (Gilles), all of Quebec.
At the age of 9, Pat moved to Saint John, NB with his parents, attending St. Patrick’s and Saint John Vocational schools. He was well known in the West Saint John area as a fiddler, playing in school concerts and several pick-up bands. In later years, Pat played with both the Saint John Old Time Fiddler’s Group, and Antique Ernie & The Hardwood Ramblers. In recognition of his fiddling excellence and contributions to country music, Pat was inducted into the NB Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002.
Pat loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed fishing, gardening, and berry picking. In his younger years, Pat played goal for the Little River men’s hockey team and was a member of the Mispec men’s softball team. He also loved bowling and was a member of the St. Ann’s league for many years. Pat worked on the CP Rail B&B crew as a painter for over 25 years, and another 20 as a stevedore for the Port of Saint John as a member of ILA Local 273. As one of the early members of the Knights of Columbus Council 6595, Pat helped raise funds for various local causes and charities. He was proud of his work with the Council and was made an honorary lifetime member in his later years.
Never one to seek out the spotlight, Pat took great pleasure in the accomplishments of others, especially young fiddlers such as his nephew Matthew Hayes. But, his greatest joy was his family; children Denise Bountalas of Surrey, BC, Patricia Boulanger (David Purdue) of Fredericton, NB, Maureen Boulanger (Christopher Armstrong) of Nagano, Japan, P. Anthony (Tony) Boulanger, Claude Boulanger (Christine), and Robert Boulanger (Cari), all of Saint John. Grandchildren Melissa Boulanger of Victoria, BC, Caitlan Bastarache (Ronnie) of Tracy, NB, Danielle Hall (Josh) of Halifax, NS, Zachary Boulanger, Cheyanne Arsenault both of Saint John, as well as Sophie and Luc Armstrong of Nagano, Japan.
A sincere thank you to Drs. Dan Scott and Patrick Omotoso for their excellent care and to the many nurses of Extra Mural who always gave their very best and with a smile, until the very end.
