Owen Robert Breker, at age 4, passed away at home on June 25, 2021, in his mother’s arms and surrounded by his family and by love. Owen passed just two days shy of the one-year anniversary of his brain cancer diagnosis. He fought this disease like the brave warrior he was. Owen may have had a short life, but during his time, he had the opportunity to touch the lives of so many people. His smile and his zest for life were infectious, his grit and determination second to none. Owen was a beautiful soul taken much too soon. His memory lives on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Owen is survived by his parents, Evan and Michelle, his brother, Isaac, his maternal grandparents, Brenda (Gerry) Wachal and Lorne Green, his paternal grandparents Ronda Sproule and James (Shirley Stenerson) Breker, his great grandmother Doris Breker, and his aunts, uncles and cousins from both sides of his extended family.
A celebration of Owen’s beautiful life will be held on Monday, July 19, 2021 at 2:30 pm outdoors at the Forestry Farm Gazebo in Saskatoon. This celebration is open to all family, friends and esteemed members of Owen’s Army from near and far. In keeping with Owen’s bright personality, we request that attendees come dressed in one of Owen’s favourites: a costume (superhero or otherwise), bright pink or purple, or your Owen’s Army t-shirt. Since the event will be held outdoors, bug spray, sunscreen and hats are suggested, weather dependent. As we recognize that many attendees, including Owen’s brother Isaac, may be too young to receive a Covid vaccine at this time, mask use and physical distancing where masks are not feasible is requested. The Forestry Farm does require a $3.50/car entry fee to the park, which is not waived for events. The Forestry Farm is a non-smoking facility. There is no smoking permitted on the premises.
Treatments for childhood cancers are sorely underfunded and outdated, especially when they are aimed to treat more rare varieties, such as Owen’s cancer.
