Orland Freeman Hunter – 93 from Dartmouth
January 16, 1928 – June 18, 2021
Dad, you are with Mom now enjoying each other once again and I’m sure your dancing. You had a great life, and lived for 93 years. You always said you were fortunate to spend 69 of those years with the love of your life Cookie as you always called Mom.
You were born in Gypsum Mines on January 16, 1928 to the late Orland Hunter Sr. & Edith Hunter (Hudson). You attended Sweet’s Corner school, and then graduated from Windsor Academy. You built a radio station in your parents’ home in Gypsum Mines, and were so proud of your 40 foot antenna. During the war you could go for a drive and listen to your music. You joined the Air Cadets, where you were a member for many years and you loved to draw comic strips, and many were published in the local paper.
You met Frances at the Band Stand in Windsor, and were married and lived in Windsor for a short time, then moving to Eastern Passage, Woodside, and then settled in Dartmouth where you would spent the rest of your lives together.
You were graced with five children, David (Sheila) Windsor, Mickael (Sylvia) Hantsport, Jackie (Susan) Lower Vaughan, Jamie (Chris) Dartmouth, and Patricia (Blaine) Dartmouth. You had 12 grandchildren, Natasha, Nicole, Sheryl, Benj, Lisa, Marsha, Michelle, Sarah, TJ, Mickaela, Jazmynn, and Christopher, nine great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. Family was so important to you.
You worked at Canadian Gypsum Company as did your brother and father, for a few years, before moving to Dartmouth. You were a civil servant working at Ferry Aviation for 19 years as an electrical inspector working on Argus and Trackers, and you stayed there until they closed. From there you worked at Halifax Dockyard for 19 years as an electrician working on submarines. You remained there until your retirement at the age of 60. You always said, you worked long enough, and you wanted to enjoy your retirement with Mom.
Dad was an avid photographer, and developed his own pictures and took so much pride in his photos. You loved practical jokes, and had a dry sense of humour that was hilarious to witness. You enjoyed your retirement by taking many trips with your Sister in Law Jean and her husband Mort. Your adventures together brought many laughs and memories that you cherished. Dad was a member of Stairs Memorial United Church. You were the fixer of anything, if it’s broke don’t throw it out, fix it. Right up until the day you left us you were a great story teller, talking about days gone by, and we could sit and listen to your stories for hours, and your memory was as sharp today as it ever was. Your second love after Mom and your family was animals. You’re dogs, Chummily, Sheemo, Tess, Jayda, and of course your Dove Emma.
After Moms passing, Dad lived for the past 18 months at Veterans Memorial. Your life changed so much, but you took it all in stride. You were always a quiet and private person, keeping your circle small, and once there you opened up and tried so many new things.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Orland & Edith Hunter (Hudson) his wife Frances, brother Avard, and great granddaughter Odessa.
Keeping with Dads wishes, cremation has taken place and online condolences can be made by visiting www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca There will be no visitation or funeral. There will be a private family memorial at a later date. In Dads memory, donations can be made to Hope for Wildlife.
