Olga Fogels (Nee Olga Valija Vidners)
July 15, 1925 – December 26, 2021.
Our dear mother, Olga, an only child, was born in Latvia. She fled her beloved country in October 1944 at age 19, at the insistence of her mother, who stayed behind, when their home front became a battlefront of the 2nd World War.
Postwar she met and married our father, Arthur Ross, and we resettled in Canada, thanks to the sponsorship of her Latvian relatives who were already resettled ahead of her here in Southern Ontario. She kept close ties with them and their families throughout all the following years; the larger Latvian community and Church also.
At the age of 40, she took up Adult Education and got her Masters degree in Social Work, followed by a several decades career into her retirement.
We are so proud of her determination and all she achieved.
She wanted us to think of her at this time per these 8 lines of a larger poem:
The Garden of Proserpine – Algernon Charles Swinburne
From too much love of living,
From hope and fear set free,
We thank with brief thanksgiving,
Whatever gods may be,
That no life lives forever,
That dead men rise up never,
That even the weariest river
Winds somewhere safe to sea…
(“from me who came from a land on the shores of the Baltic Sea”)
