Norma Evelyn Burrell July 1 1934 December 7 2021

The family of Norma Burrell, sadly announce that she passed away on December 7, 2021, at the age of 87 yrs. Norma was born July 1, 1934, to Sandy and Selma Freeman of Forshee, Alberta. Norma was the fourth child, joining three older brothers. Later another girl, Lois, was born, completing a family of five children.
Norma had a typical prairie childhood, horses were used to travel to a one-room country school, horseback in summer, sleds in winter. Later, in the larger school in Bentley, Norma developed a love of all sports. She participated in track and field, volleyball, basketball, and softball. In winter it was hockey and skating. At this time, she was also introduced to curling, which would become a lifelong passion.
Norma married Charles Milton Burrell (Chuck) on May 15, 1953, at home, on the family farm, surrounded by family, and friends. In true prairie fashion, the supper and wedding dance was held at the local community hall.
Chuck’s employment in the oil patch took them first to Brooks, Alberta, then back to Bentley, and finally to Calgary. During this time their three children were born; Brenda in 1954, Bob in 1957, and Barbara, in 1964.
The year, 1965, saw the big move to the Yukon, where they were destined to make their forever home. As well as raising the children and keeping house, Norma was soon involved in community sports, softball in summer and curling in winters. In 1996, she was on the Senior’s Ladies team that represented the Yukon in the Canadian Senior’s National Bonspiel in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Norma also worked at various times for an Insurance Company, the Northern Store, and for Home care, a branch of Yukon Health Services, as well as bookkeeping for Burtran Transport.
Norma was known for her wonderful homemade bread and cinnamon buns, as well as her home style, from scratch meals. She took pleasure in cooking, and having people enjoy her efforts.
Chuck passed away in 2018, in their 66th year of marriage.
Norma will be dearly missed by; daughter Brenda, son Bob (Becky) daughter Barb, grandson Scott (Heather), granddaughter Lynn, great- grandsons, Stanley, and Warren. As well, many friends, nieces and nephews and other relatives in Alberta.
The family would like to thank Dr Averill, the caregivers at the Thomson Centre, and most recently at the Whistle Bend Care Facility for their patience and care during Norma’s stay these past six months.
There will not be a memorial service at this time.
