Mom was born on July 7, 1927 in the town of Goes, The Netherlands. She was the first born of 6 brothers and 1 sister. Her father owned a bakery and one of her duties was delivering bread all over town on her bicycle.
Mom married dad on April 15, 1952 . They were the first of their families to emigrate to Canada, in June of 52. Mom joked about that being their honeymoon, and how they had to sleep on different sides of the boat! They worked on a farm near Oak Lake, MB for a few years and then moved to Winnipeg. They eventually settled in Transcona where they lived for almost 60 years.
Mom worked at various jobs over the years, but the longest was at Family Services helping families in need of an all day caregiver. She had some longer term assignments, and these families came to love and appreciate her.
Mom loved many summer camping trips, almost every summer even into her 80s, as well as winters spent in Arizona post-retirement.
Mom was an avid knitter, and also made many needlepoint and cross stitch pictures over the years. She also loved reading, always having a book on the side table up until recently. Mom was a big soccer fan and watched any game she could.
Mom was a faithful member of Transcona Christian Reformed Church. She had several good friends there and especially loved being part of the ladies bible study, and choir.
Thanks to the staff at Riverview 3-west for their loving care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MS Society of Canada in Nellie’s memory. mssociety.ca
