Catherine Ann Notman Fetherstonhaugh died peacefully on June 20th, 2021 in Pointe-Claire, Quebec after an extraordinary life full of love, hard work, and adventure.
Cathy was the daughter of Keith Claxton Notman and Catherine Ann Lyall Notman. She was the devoted mother of Robert (Montreal), Brian (New York), Catherine (Ottawa) and Timothy Keith, who died in infancy. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, John Fetherstonhaugh, and by her brother William Notman. She was the beloved grandmother to Julie, Laura, David, Claire, Alison, Alex and Brian, proud great-grandmother to Isla, Emily and Nina Catherine, and step-grandmother to Alex and Brittany. Cathy was much loved by Christine Zufelt, Christine Kofler, John Graham and Heidi Edwards and many friends and family around the world.
Cathy grew up in Westmount, attending The Study and later the Notre Dame secretarial school. She worked in administration and marketing over a 30-year period at CIL, Vaughan and Shaw, Westinghouse, Sandoz, and Novartis. She was President of both the Dorval and Beaconsfield Figure Skating Clubs and Treasurer of the Canadian Women’s Club. Continuing her family tradition, Cathy was the director and majority owner of Wallace Stone Quarries in Nova Scotia.
Cathy had amazing hands – highly skilled and constantly in motion. She could type over 80 words-per-minute, and was an accomplished seamstress, knitter and baker. She conjured up beautiful smock dresses, sparkly skating outfits, many ‘flocks’ of sheep’s wool sweaters for her family, and created wonderful Christmas puddings and cookies for the holidays. Cathy loved playing cards – especially those hotly contested games of Spite & Malice with her delightful Aunt Edna. She was an enthusiastic traveller and hostess, visiting over 35 countries, and turning the family home into a bed & breakfast during EXPO ’67 to host 238 guests from around the world.
Cathy remained sharp as a tack until her final days. She cared deeply about her family and friends and never forgot a birthday. In recent months, she was working on her tax returns and board of directors’ minutes for her stone quarry. And well into her late 80’s she played goalie in the annual Fetherstonhaugh Family Road Hockey Tournament on Christmas Day. Last spring, Cathy beat Covid. She eventually succumbed to pneumonia at age 92.
The family is deeply grateful to Cathy’s friends and caregivers over the years, and especially to Paulette James, Judi Doyle and Irene Angelis for their loving care, support and friendship. You brought great comfort and laughter to our mother.
