Age 71. It is with great sadness, we announce the
peaceful passing of our wife, mother and sister, Monica, on October
28th, 2021, which occurred at the Inverness
Consolidated Memorial Hospital (ICMH), Inverness
County.
Born and raised in Inverness, at « the
Corner. » Monica was the eighth out of eleven children
born to the late Jesse (Beaton) and Owen Dan Gillis. Monica moved to
Whycocomagh after her education was completed, to start her teaching
career and made Blues Mills her family home.
Monica leaves behind her husband, John Hugh and their two
children, Shawn and Shauna, both in Halifax. Along with
Shauna’s common-law partner, Blair MacKinnon and their fur
baby, Macy (cat); whom mom always asked about and loved to see when
they would make the frequent trips home to Cape
Breton.
Monica was a loving and devoted wife and mother. Always
worried about her children, no matter where they were. She was a
hardworking and dedicated schoolteacher for just over 30 years. She
was also dedicated in volunteering in school functions and within her
community. She was always there to lend a hand. Her shortbread
cookies, blueberry or chocolate chip muffins were always popular at
family and community functions. She was a kind, caring, loving soul,
who put everyone else first, even to the end.
She also leaves behind her sisters, Marie (Joe) MacRae,
Michigan; Joyce (David) Gillis, Scotsville; Gwen, Inverness; Joan
(Hughie) Cameron, Scotsville; Jane, West Mabou; Brenda (Sandy) Gillis,
Inverness and brothers, Lorne, Inverness; Ernest (Pauline), West
Mabou; sister-in-laws, Alice Gillis, Inverness; and Carol Gillis,
Mabou. Along with a long list nieces and nephews and grand nieces and
nephews that she always loved to visit and hear stories
about.

Frankie and Sandy; sister-in-law, Marguerite. Along with
John’s parents, Sally & Hughie MacLennan, his
brothers, Gussie and Alexander; sister, Margaret; nephew, Brendan and
niece, Katie. Also, their first family pet, Fluffy (cat),
who gave much joy to her home in Blues Mills.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Dennis

Monica’s request, there will be no visitation. Funeral will
take place on Saturday, November 20, 2021, 2 p.m. from Stella Maris

ICMH – Palliative Care.
A sincere thank you to all doctors, nurses, paramedics, and
all staff at ICMH that helped mom during her battle with cancer and
