Moncton – Marc Gallant, 83, of Moncton, sadly passed away, on Monday, September 6th, 2021.
Born in Bathurst, NB, he was the son of the late Amatus and the late Florida (Haché) Gallant.
Marc remained a kid from the country for his entire life, loving long walks in the woods or on the beach. He often told stories of walking from home to Bathurst College and back, uphill and into the snow – remarkably in both directions! Marc always took an interest in everyone young and old alike and could often make connections back to people’s grandparents. He was kind, helpful and generous. He was proud of his Acadian heritage and enjoyed researching family genealogy. He had 101 uses for pine sap and was happy to explain the differences between various pines, spruce, fir and, like his own father, could use a chain saw with precision. That love of country led him and Elly to buying and renovating their old farmhouse in Pleasantvale, the centre of many large family gatherings. In the sixty years of marriage Elly and Marc had many adventures: family camping, picnics, getting lost and stuck on muddy country roads, trips to the big cities and the hobby of making maple syrup with his family. Early in his career, Marc took his young family to Trinidad, where he taught social work students. Later, he would
teach at Université de Moncton. Prior to retirement, Marc worked with the Parole Board for the Government of Canada. He was a champion of social justice, something that came through in his early work life with the John Howard Society and continued through his career, including his voluntary work on victim-offender reconciliation and his work with the national board of the Church Council on Justice and Corrections. That social justice trait was passed on to his
children and grandchildren. Marc was also very spiritual, but not in the sense of formal church teachings: instead, he considered philosophical questions of happiness and good and practiced Buddhist meditation.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Elizabeth (Elly) (Bouma); his daughter, Thérèse (Dana LeBlanc) of Dieppe; his sons: André (Paula McNabb) of Sydney, NS and Claude (Shelley Langis) of Rexton; his sisters: Julia Bourgeois (Roger) of Moncton, Sylvia Roy of Gatineau, QC and Gemma Bouma (Gerald) of Moncton; his brother, Reginald (Betty Ann) of Bathurst; his grandchildren: Nicholas, Mathieu, Graeme and Max, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters: Lilliana and Patricia and brothers: Gilbert, Wilfred and Yvon.
*Although not mandatory, we encourage everyone to wear a mask and to follow social distancing*

Sympathies message

  1. To Aunt Elly…beautiful Aunt Elly, my cousins, André, Thérèse, and Claude and all my Gallant family…Please know that my thoughts are with you today and will be with you on Saturday. I am saddened by the news but after reading the text, I realize that
mon-oncle Marc lived his best life and thanks to the good he did, I am convinced that his goodness will continue to live on through all who know him. I will forever be grateful for having known him and only keep good memories of him actually listening to me when I spoke, his openness, and generosity. My heartfelt sympathies to all of you. Elaine
