Mildred’s Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly loved Mom, Mildred Canning, aged 96 years young, eldest resident of Comfort Cove-Newstead and long time resident (by choice) of Pleasantview Manor in Lewisporte which she referred to as her “other home”. The staff were her “other angels” of whom we, as a family, will forever be indebted to for the genuine care and love rendered to our Mom. Thank you Pleasantview Manor for the peace of mind you have given our family over the past 13 years through your extraordinary personal care services.
Mom was born in Hooping Harbour, NL., in 1925, the third eldest of 10 children, to parents Thomas and Flossie Cassell, now deceased. Also predeceased by brothers Albert, Seymour, and Andrew; and sisters Pearl (Tucker) and Carrie (Coutts). Leaving to mourn her loss are her siblings Meta Kennedy (Jack deceased); Harriet Parsons (Robert); and Hubert Cassell (Dorcas); and brothers-in-law Elihu Canning (Marjorie) and Kaywood Canning (Vivian). At the age of 19 Mom came to Newstead for employment and met and married the love of her life, Clancy Canning, who predeceased her in 1999 at the tender age of 73. Mom & Dad raised a family of 10 children who were the essence of their “never ending love story”. Our parents were strong pillars of Salvation Army faith in their community, with Mom being an active S. A. Home League Member for over 60 years before going to Pleasantview Manor. At the time of her passing she was the eldest Salvation Army soldier in the community. Mom continued to proclaim her faith and love for God right up to her final days by being instrumental in laying out her specific biblical readings and hymns for her final celebration of life. In addition to her spiritual side, our mother could draw fun and laughter from the most sombre of crowds with her infectious personality and natural wit. In addition to her homemaking excellence she was a woman of multiple talents…. especially singing and performing….with a little accordion playing from time to time! She loved her family and family gatherings and for all the above reasons and more she will be missed beyond words by daughters: Vivian Templeman (Don deceased); Harriet Noel (Mike); Joy Moyles; Queenie Munn (David); Charity (Rich); Cherri (Roy); Zelda Canning; and sons: Frank (Lorraine Walsh); Andrew; and Eric (Sheila). Remembering Nana for the special “bond” they held with her are grandchildren: Nadine (Gerry) and Troy Templeman; Michelle Paul-Yeary (Joe) and Jay Paul; Roxanne and Chad Moyles; Cherri (Michael) O’Donnell; Colette Beals (Pearce); Corinna Pickett; Amy (Bulmer) and Jeremy White; Parker and Peter (Alison) Hughes; Eldon and Gordie (Keeley) Canning; and very “special” grandchild Trevor who spent his life “next door to Nanny” and loved to visit her at the Manor. Also remembering Nana are great grandchildren Ryan and Rachel Chaulk; Caelan and Jayden Chapman; Madyson and Jaxson Canning; and Peter Hughes, Jr.
Public Visitation will be welcomed by family at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home in Lewisporte on September 3rd (Friday) from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm following COVID government regulations. Celebration of Life to take place on September 4th (Saturday) from the Salvation Army Citadel in Comfort Cove-Newstead for invited guests only. At Mom’s request, memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army Corps, Box 40, Comfort-Cove/Newstead, NL. A0G 3K0. Floral tributes will also be graciously accepted.
“Thank you Mom for ALWAYS being the wind beneath our wings!”
