Merle Ivy Lightbound 1926 – 2021
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother Merle Ivy Lightbound of Aurora, Ontario on July 11th 2021 at the age of 95. Daughter of Sidney James Barnsdale and Ivy (Nee Cook). Merle is survived by her brother James Barnsdale of Beaverton, her children, David Charles, Norman Sidney, Nancy Merle Wilson and Julie Anne Dalton. Merle was a wonderful mother in law to Judy and Alison Lightbound, Andrew Dalton, and Gordon Wilson. Loving and giving grandmother to Jeremy and Erin Lightbound, Julian, Damien and George Lightbound, Blake, Kelly Dalton, and Holly Flett, Brett, Hayley and Hilary Wilson. Great grandmother to Jahmari Ellison, Denver Flett and Kennedy Dalton.
Merle was raised in the high park area of Toronto, and married George Aylmer Lightbound in 1947. The home Merle and Al created was a favorite spot for friends and family as many memories were made by the pool on Didrickson Drive. While raising her children Merle was on school PTA’S, volunteered at the United church as a Sunday school teacher and held several other volunteer positions within the community. Merle was an expert seamstress with enviable skills with pattern making, in fact, she created her own wedding dress and made most of her own clothing. At 50 years of age Merle took up tennis and became a real competitor at the local LINKS tennis club, playing the sport to the age of 83. An incredibly well-read intelligent woman, Merle became a wizard at cards and also computer savvy when she moved into her condo in Aurora. ( AKA Condo Nanny ) Despite being one of the more senior residents, she made many friendships with people of all ages.
Today there are many, who are saddened by the passing of a beautiful woman who treated everyone with respect, spoke her mind, loved fiercely and gave of herself unconditionally. Her optimistic, positive zest and interest in life is what drew people to her. We will miss her deeply. Consistent with Merle’s wishes, there will not be a service but a celebration of life will be held at a future date.
