Mel was born in Ponoka, Alberta on February 13, 1936. He grew up in Ponoka and graduated from high school in Lumby, B.C. He returned to Alberta to work with his dad, and it was then that he met the love of his life at the Ponoka Stampede dance in 1955. After their first dance, he knew she was the one. Mel & Katie would spend nearly 65 years together in marriage, they started out in Vancouver and then moved to Cranbrook, B.C., in 1958. He worked as a car salesman for 20 years and then went on to work at Beaver Lumber building sheds. Mel held various jobs involving home repair which earned him the nickname ‘the Handyman.’ Mel and Katie raised four daughters and enjoyed going salmon fishing together on Vancouver Island in the summers. In the last years of his life, Mel suffered from dementia and was cared for by Katie at home.
Special thanks to Dr. Brown and the nursing staff at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital who showed great care in his last days.
