Obituary of Mary Kathleen ‘Kaye’ Stephenson, RN (Retired), New Waterford
Our family wishes to announce the peaceful passing of our dear Aunt Kaye on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck. Although she was our Aunt, she was known as ‘Aunt Kaye’ to everyone who knew and loved her and benefitted from her generosity.
Kathleen ‘Kaye’ Stephenson born January 7, 1933 in New Waterford was a daughter of the late Leonard and Christina (MacDougall) Stephenson.
Kaye was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard. She was employed at Eaton’s Mail Order Delivery in New Waterford prior to entering her training at St. Elizabeth Hospital in North Sydney. She then completed her Post Graduate studies at St. Michael’s in Toronto and became employed as a Registered Nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital, currently Northside General, for 40 years until her retirement. Kaye was a member of the C.W.L. and the St. Elizabeth Hospital Alumni and was an honorary life member of the Registered Nurses’ Association of Nova Scotia. She also served with the Canadian Forces Militia in Sydney No. 6 Medical Company for approximately 12 years, receiving a Canadian Forces Decoration.
Surviving are sister, Irene (Noel) Funge, Trenton, ON; nieces, Kathleen Casey, Charlottetown, PE, Geraldine Loro, Shannon (Tony) Nemis, Lonita (Tony) Loro, all of New Waterford; nephew, Lawrence Funge (Audrey), Edmonton, AB; much loved grandnephews and grandnieces, Ryan, Dean, Angelo, Ricardo, Jason, Daniel, Nicholas, Derek, Megan and Melissa.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Leona and her brother-in-law, Gerald Tonary.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Masks and social distancing required. A Funeral Mass of celebration will be held at the Parish Church of St. Leonard with Father Tom MacNeil officiating. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the funeral is by invitation only.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the the Alderwood Rest Home Social Committee or the Cape Breton University Nursing Scholarship Fund. Appreciation is extended from the family to the staff of Alderwood Rest Home for the loving care and attention shown to our Aunt Kaye.
