Mary, a proud descendant of original settlers (1831) to Dummer Township, lived all her life in Warsaw. True to her roots she set aside aspirations of secondary education and teaching to help her parents on the family farm. Mary was an “A” student with a love for reading and history. In farm life she won many prizes and awards, from livestock, farm products and baked goods at local fairs and exhibitions. In 1942 she married and took up residence in Warsaw in a house that had belonged to her grandfather. Mary was a skilled homemaker and dedicated mother with endless energy. Seemingly never too tired for bedtime stories or to whip up the kids favourite snacks and desserts, help with homework and offer support and encouragement. Later in life when the children grew up Mary found the time to return to her passions of reading and history. Mary travelled to England twice to research family genealogy and constructed a comprehensive family tree. Mary had a remarkable memory and was able to retain all the history of her family that been passed down from generations. Mary penned a collection of historically based short stories that her son Warren forwarded to Professor Elwood Jones at the Trent Valley Archives, these were published as the first edition of his “Memories Series” as “Lazarus Payne – Growing up in Dummer”. Our family will remember her as a mother, grandmother and wife but also as a reader, writer, teacher and intellectual. “Little Mary” is not gone, she is just off to Quarry pasture with her faithful dog Grit to fetch the cows home for milking.
Cremation has taken place as per the family’s request. A private interment at St. Marks cemetery in Warsaw will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy and memorial donations may be made to the C.N.I.B and or the Alzheimer Society.
