It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Migay on July 4, 2021 at home with family by her side.
Born in Geraldton Ontario to Slovak immigrants, at the age of two her family moved to a farm in Thunder Bay, where she resided the majority of her life.
Mary embarked on her education at John Street School, culminating in her BA and teaching degree. She began her career as a teacher and eventually became the Director of Physical Education at the Lakehead Catholic School Board, a position she left to raise her children. She returned to teach ESL once they had grown.
Mary and Rudy married in 1972 and together they built their family home next to Mary’s parents. She thrived as “a mother” to all who came there. Outside of the home she was very involved in the sporting lives of her children, coaching and holding many leadership positions with the Thunder Bay Ringette Association. She was also an avid gardener and vendor at the Thunder Bay Farmer’s Market. Always a faithful Catholic, she attended mass regularly, despite travelling and disability.
Though Mary encountered ill health in the last several years, she approached her illness with determination and grace. We would like to thank the family and friends who enhanced Mary’s quality of life over the past several years along with Father Joseph Arokiam; Dr. Margaret Sweet; Dr. Pramila Rao and Dr. Kevin Miller. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel towards Marilou and Ivory who dedicatedly cared for Mary during the last 4 years.
We will miss your engaging smile and infectious laugh and non judgemental ear.
Predeceased by parents Andrew and Pauline Kurchina, sister Pauline, brother Emil, newborn daughter Anne and husband Rudy, Mary is survived by her sisters Helen and Kristine, children Andrew (Debbie), Marcia (Wayne), Mary-Katherine (Glenn) and Ann-Marie (Bryan), and her 2 granddaughters and 7 grandsons.
Confirmed and married at St. Peter’s Slovak Parish in Thunder Bay, Mary will celebrate her final Mass there Thursday July 8, 2021 at 10am. Interment to follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Due to the current restrictions there is a limited space available for friends to attend. Should you wish to attend please go to Mary’s page on the Blake Funeral Chapel website to RSVP or call the funeral home to reserve your spot. A live stream of the service will be available on St. Peter’s Church Facebook page (www.facebook.com/StPeters-Church-Thunder-Bay-801501289862375).
Donations in Mary’s memory to St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, the Migay-Cerven Adult Education Bursary at Lakehead University or the charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated.
