Obituary
Mary Ellen MacKeigan
Florence
It is with sadness and broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Ellen MacKeigan on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at the Northside Community Guest Home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bras d’Or on June 18, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Gertrude (Gillis) Boudreau. She was the beloved wife and best friend to David MacKeigan for 61 years, mother to Joanne (Harvey) LeBlanc, Vaughn (Marie) MacKeigan, Kara-Lee (Michael) Jessome, grandmother to Adam, Courtney, Jean-Marc, Jennifer, Shawn, Ryan, Anna and Keigan. Great-grandmother to Abby, Liam, Logan, Jack and two babies soon to arrive. Sister to Theresa Reid and Emma Reashore, sister-in-law to Sandra (Elmer) Roper, Bibsey MacKeigan, and Warren (Patrica) MacKeigan. Aunt to many special nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister Yvonne Laidlaw, a brother in infancy, nephews Ray, Audie, Terrance and Joey, niece Geralyn Reid, as well as brothers-in-law Gordie, Eddie, Austin and Larry, and mother and father-in-law Gertrude and Murdock MacKeigan.
Ellen started her career as a hairdresser, which she worked for 25 years. She then worked as a waitress at various restaurants, finally finding her dream job as a cook at the Miner’s Memorial Manor for 15 years, from where she retired.
Ellen’s true passion was to cook and bake for her family. Her love for travel and shopping took her on many great trips with her family and friends. She loved to go for long drives anywhere the car and Davie would take her.
She was a faithful member of her church community, giving freely of her time wherever she was needed.
She was an amazing woman who would make all feel loved and special with her warm smile and hugs. We will miss her deeply.
In February 2019, Mom went to live at the Northside Community Guest Home, where she was cared for by the wonderful staff at the MacEachern and Teresa Terrace Units. Our Family will be forever grateful to all of the devoted staff who cared for our mother with such understanding, compassion and kindness.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ellen’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at 11 am in Holy Family Church in Sydney Mines. The burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery, Bras d’Or. Donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, St. Joseph’s Bras d’Or Cemetery or a charity of one’s choice.
