Obituary of Mary Eileen Sampson
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and peaceful passing of our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother Mary Eileen Sampson, on April 27, 2020, at her home of 18 years, St. Anne Community & Nursing Care Centre, Arichat NS.; (previously from Louisdale NS). Mom was 88 years old and was born on June 22, 1931, in Walkerville (Whiteside) NS. She was the daughter of John and Anny Scanlan and is survived by her brothers Wilfred Scanlan, Northwood Manor Halifax NS; and Paul Scanlan, Halifax NS; Sisters Donzella Samson, St. Peters Villa NS; Marcella Byrne, Ivey Meadows Beaver Bank NS; Anna (Bruce) Ellis Dartmouth, NS; and Sister-in-Law Almira Scanlan, Oakwood Terrace Dartmouth NS. She is also survived by her 6 children – Wayne, Brampton ON; Brian (Penny), Markham ON; Lloyd (Barb), Fort McMurray AB; Paul (Erleen), Louisdale NS; Steve, Louisdale NS; Brent (Erma), Louisdale NS. Also Daughter-in-Law Cathy Sampson, Louisdale NS. Mom is also survived by her 12 grandchildren – Chris Sampson, Ian (Melissa) Sampson, Elysia (Brent) Marchand, Krystal (Andy) Belanger, Michelle Sampson (Kasey), Ashley (Katie) Cowell, Christopher Sampson, Jaymie (Ryan)Sampson, Kristen (Parker) Knox, Jacques (Drea) Sampson, Tyler Sampson, Sarah Sampson; and 9 great-grandchildren – Brea and Luke; Scarlett; Chloe and Benjamin; Daniel and Isla; Breton and Camden…all of whom she loved dearly and prayed for daily. Her family and friends meant everything to her; she loved them all dearly.
Mom is predeceased by her parents John (Anny) Scanlan, Whiteside NS; Husband Alfred Sampson Lousidale NS; Jeffrey Sampson (1st husband & father of children) Louisdale NS; Brothers John (Arvella) and Jim Scanlan, Halifax NS; Brother-in-Law Teddy Sampson, Grand Anse, NS; and very sadly predeceased by her Great Granddaughter Clara Joan Belanger, Brockville ON.
Mom made St. Anne Community & Nursing Care Centre her home and was a social butterfly….she loved to visit with her friends and chat…(they would share the news of the day) (hehe) ….when Paul and I (Erleen) would visit we sometimes would find her in a different room visiting …. she loved playing cards and looked forward to her bingo games twice a week…she couldn’t wait to tell us when she would win her $2 or $5 games…she had so much fun. She also enjoyed reading books that were provided to her by La Picasse library in PDG NS, listening to her Charlie Pride music (Crystal Chandelier was her favorite), and enjoyed the Sunday afternoon music groups who would entertain for them. Mom loved making her Search Word puzzles and coloring in her adult coloring books… she also watched her daily evening show on TV. These things kept her mind sharp, as she could remember so much of her past, and would always tell us stories from a long time ago.
Mom looked forward to having visitors, and enjoyed visits from friends or family, especially if someone from Louisdale was visiting. We all tried to go every week when possible so it would break up the week for her and she liked that….Steve would visit and help at bingo times; Paul and I (Erleen) visited on the weekends and did facetime with Elysia, Brea and Luke (granddaughter and great-grandchildren) out in Fort McMurray AB …she loved seeing and talking with them. Always put a smile on her face….we always kept her updated showing her pictures of all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed her phone calls from her sons and sister Anna when they called. Mom always looked forward to her lobster and smelts from Paul and had just asked Paul the day before she passed if we were getting any lobster…our plans were to take her some the weekend after if we were able to. She loved her lobster sandwiches, and enjoyed a good chinese food dish. She also enjoyed her weekly visits from Cathy and Chris (grandson). She was so grateful for that; and visits from family in Whiteside and surrounding areas. As I mentioned she loved having family and friends around her… She was so proud of ALL her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved them dearly. Mom had a strong catholic faith that was always a comfort to her, she recited her prayers and rosary daily and attended any eucharistic celebrations that took place. She always kept her family in her prayers and I am sure she will be watching over us all as we continue our journey in life.
Our heartfelt appreciation to all the Staff and Volunteers of St. Anne Community & Nursing Care Centre, Arichat NS, during these past 18 years our mom resided with you. This was her home where she made many friends and was well taken care of. I am sure her friends will miss her daily visits, chats, card and bingo games….She will be missed by all who knew her. We, her family, THANK YOU..
Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass in St. Louis Church, Louisdale on Friday, October 15th at 11:00am with Rev. Duncan MacIsaac presiding. Burial to follow in St. Louis Parish Cemetery, Louisdale. Donations can be sent to the St. Anne Community & Nursing Care Centre, 2313 Hwy 206, P. O. Box 30, Arichat NS, B0E 1A0.
