It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary Doney (nee Searle), who passed away at Élisabeth Bruyère on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 86 years of age after a very brief illness.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband Rod, her brother Bob (Dr. Robert Q. Searle), sister-in-law Becky (Searle-Armstrong), and stepson Steve Novak.
Loving mother of Karen (Brian Davies) and Lisa (Rod Bruneau).
She will be missed enormously by her grandchildren Justin Davies, Cameron and Sarah Bruneau, Aimee, Loren, Daymond, Kimberleigh and Dylan Novak.
She will also be dearly missed by her nieces, nephews and brother-in-law Gerry Armstrong in Ottawa, and her family in Southern and Southwestern Ontario, England, and Wales.
Originally from Montreal, Mary was a nurse at the Montreal General Hospital when she met Rod at a party. It was not long before they married and had many wonderful years together raising children, traveling, and sailing. Mom was Dad’s devoted, albeit fair-weather, First Mate on many sailing expeditions on Lake Champlain, Lake Saint Louis, Lake St. Lawrence and even on the Ottawa River. She loved listening to music and enjoyed a good game of bridge. She played for many years with the Ottawa Newcomers Club (ONAC) alumni and with her friends at Bearbrook Retirement Residence. Mary also loved spending time with her family.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the caring and compassionate medical team, especially the nurses and PCAs on 5D at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, to the palliative care team, again especially the nurses, on the 5th floor at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital for their care and support over these last few weeks as well as to the staff at the Bearbrook Retirement Residence for their ongoing care and support.
Friends and family may visit at St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road (at Aviation Parkway), Ottawa, on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, December 16, 2021 from 10 a.m. until time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at 11 a.m. Reception to follow off-site. For those who wish to attend the visitation and/or service, please RSVP on the funeral home website just below Mary’s obituary. Proof of full vaccination and ID will be required upon arrival.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bruyère.org in support of the Élisabeth Bruyère Palliative Care Unit.
