GIVERTZ, Marvin, QC, BComm, LLB, LLM, ABC, 123 (October 3, 1931-May 8, 2021). In his 90th year, son of the late Lazer and Chana Givertz, brother of the late Gloria Albert, husband of 60 plus years of Elaine Givertz, father (and father-in-law) of Alisa Givertz, Ruth Givertz and Eric Szonyi, Michelle Givertz, and Adam Givertz and Jennifer Steel, grandfather of Zach Jost, Sam Jost, Jacob Givertz-Steel, Aaron Jost, Noah Givertz Szonyi, Benjamin Givertz- Steel, Asher Givertz Szonyi, Isabella Jost, Jasper Deveraux, Bella Givertz Szonyi, Jada Deveraux and Ellie Givertz-Steel. Marvin was born in poverty at the height of the Depression, the first-born child of recently arrived working-class Jewish immigrants from Poland. With Yiddish as his mother tongue, Motl entered kindergarten in the Fall of 1936 not speaking a word of English. Failing kindergarten for that deficit became a badge of honour for Marv who, like many first-generation Canadians, went on to university and developed an appetite for learning and an enduring curiosity that never left him. Marv had a zest for life often enhanced by travel, animated by argument, enlivened by food and drink, but more than anything, fueled by friendship. He was genuinely interested in the people he met, wherever he met them and whatever their station, and he built enduring friendships throughout his life, even on into his 80s. Life with Marvin was not always fun and frolic, but in the end we loved him deeply, something that never ceased to astonish him, and he was profoundly grateful for the love of his family and the camaraderie of his friends. Marv died in the early morning on May 8th with his wife and children at his bedside, the end of a nine-month ordeal that began with a bad fall and spinal surgery in July 2020. Throughout this period, Marv’s will to live was unwavering and his appreciation for being alive unrelenting, even in the face of ever- increasing compromises to his health. More than anything, Marv considered himself lucky to have a wife, four children and 12 grandchildren whom he loved and who loved him. We are saddened by Marvin’s death and will miss him in our lives, but we are blessed by our memories of him. We would like to thank all of Marv’s caregivers over the past nine months, especially Dr. Will T’Live who helped recharge Marvin’s resilient spirit. A family graveside service will be held on Monday, May 10, 2021.
