Obituary
MARJORIE LEONA WALTON HENRIE, beloved mother, grandmother, and wife of the late Merlin Henrie of Milk River, passed away in Lethbridge, Alberta on October 9, 2021, at the age of 93. She is survived by her five children, Gerald (Marilyn) Henrie, Curtis (Sharon) Henrie, Dee Henrie, Elton (Karen) Henrie, and Shannon (Glenn) Thomson; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; sisters, Fern Hennessy, and Bonnie Law; and brother, Andrew Walton. She was predeceased by her husbands, Merlin Henrie and Lawrence Halmrast; her sisters, Rhea Lawlor, Louise Henrie, and Della May Walton; and her brothers, Cecil, Harold, Woodrow, and Ken.
Marjorie was born in Raymond, Alberta, Canada, on April 13, 1928. She was one of eleven children born to Mabel Crandall Walton and William Danie Walton. She grew up on a farm in Diamond City, where she learned to work hard. They later moved to Rosemary. She finished her high school education in Utah, where she had moved to care for her grandmother.
Marjorie met Merlin Henrie (Mert) through his brother, Dan, who was married to her sister, Louise. Marjorie and Mert were married in the Cardston Temple on June 30, 1949. They raised their family in Coutts and Milk River. Marjorie was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various positions faithfully. She was also very active in her community, where she worked tirelessly to contribute to town celebrations and to support her children with their music lessons and other interests. She was known for her knitting and gave away numerous sweaters, blankets, and other items that she made. The nativity sets she knitted for each of her 18 grandchildren have become cherished heirlooms. She also made many quilts by hand for her children and grandchildren. Marjorie was a homemaker by choice, and as her responsibilities at home were eased, she took on a job caring for others outside her home.
Marjorie was devastated when she lost Mert, leaving her a widow at the age of 54. She later married Lawrence Halmrast and with him enjoyed exploring many of the archeological sites around Southern Alberta. She loved visiting with guests whom they invited into their home to see their collections.
Family reunions and gathering for family events were times she looked forward to most. She loved having everyone in the family together. She did extensive family research and worked in the name extraction program for the Church, along with Mert. In her later years, after both husbands had passed, she served as a full-time family history missionary in Salt Lake City, Utah and, for a short time, Vancouver, B.C. Marjorie had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ that she shared through her words and actions.
