Marion Bancks 2021

After a long struggle with dementia we say good-bye to our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend.
Marion Sylvia (Buchanan) Bancks, age 97, passed away peacefully on Miners Lane, Harbourstone Enhanced Care on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.
Born 1923 in St. Ann’s, Victoria County, Marion was the daughter of the late Dan Neil and Euphemia (Taylor) Buchanan.
Marion was predeceased by her husband, Ainslie in 2004 and son, Jamie in 2017. She was also predeceased by three brothers, Norman, William and Henry and sons-in-law, Wally Durdle, Robert Budden and Hans Teuber.
She is survived by her children, Judith Budden and Sheila (Durdle) Mercer (Roy); seven grandchildren, Lyle (Ashley), Jennifer (Charlie), Mark (Crystal), Scott (Cathy), Susan (Kris), Jamie and David; daughter-in-law, Teresa Bancks; nine great-grandchildren, Owen, Kenzie, Breton, Mason, Blake, Jordyn, Avery, Lukas and Ryley, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Until her retirement in 1988, Mom was employed at the Registration and Records department of the former Adult Vocational Training Center. She also held the position of treasurer of the NSGEU for many years.
Mom enjoyed staying current in all things connected with politics and there was only one party to vote for and everyone in the family knew it. Mom’s favourite pastimes were needlepoint, crossword puzzles and every Saturday making her fabulous homemade buns. No day was complete without watching the six o’clock news, which was never to be interrupted.
Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling to Europe, Florida and trips to the Buchanans in Western Canada. Their summers were spent at their cottage in St. Ann’s, at the Goose Cove School House. Lobsters and great Celtic music were enjoyed there often by many family and friends. However, the days Mom enjoyed most were days the grandchildren were with her. Mom and Dad’s annual Boxing Day family gathering was at the top of her list of the most beautiful day of the year.
We would like to thank the staff of Miners Lane for the wonderful care shown to our mother over the past nine years. During Mom’s final week, she and we the family, were shown much kindness and compassion by all the wonderful staff. Thank you.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A private family burial at Goose Cove will take place at a later date.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca, e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatioc.ca or P. O. Box 341, Station A, Sydney, NS, B1P 6H2
