Obituary
Marilyn Scobie (née Martin) passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at Hamilton General Hospital with her sons by her side, on October 11, 2021, in her 74th year. She is predeceased by her parents, Georgena (Flindall) and Arthur Martin, and her sister and best friend Carolyn (Berlin). Marilyn will be deeply missed by her beloved sons Christopher and John Stocovaz (Andrea Collins) and grandchildren James, Sho and Lisa Stocovaz; her siblings, Barbara Hall (Chris Powell), Allan Martin (Patti Todd), and Brenda Martin (Paul Garrett), her nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
A vibrant, intelligent woman, Marilyn graduated from the Ontario Hospital School of Nursing in Kingston in 1968. Her long and successful career as an RN spanned five decades working at various hospitals including: Hanover & District Hospital, Victoria Hospital, McMaster University Medical Centre, West Lincoln Memorial and Milton District Hospital. For much of her career, she specialized as a labour and delivery nurse. Her generous, compassionate heart helped bring countless new lives into the world. She retired in 2012.
Marilyn had a lifelong passion for reading. Nothing suited her more than to immerse herself in the pages of a book, particularly sci-fi and fantasy. If there was a Blues song playing, she was always ready to dance. She loved playing games and would never turn down the opportunity to play cards, board or computer games. In her retirement, Marilyn enjoyed spending time with family and friends, listening to music or watching British mysteries. Her most recent hobby was painting, which allowed her to express her creativity on canvas with acrylics.
Marilyn loved her children and grandchildren deeply and was extremely proud of their accomplishments. As a sister and friend, she was generous, caring and always offered a strong shoulder to those who needed one. Her love for literature included poetry and one of her favourites, by e.e. cummings, is a sentiment that can be felt by all who knew her, “i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)”. An independent, private soul, Marilyn navigated life on her own terms with courage, grace, laughter and determination. She is written in indelible ink on our hearts and will never be forgotten.
Marilyn’s family wish to thank the EMT and staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, and the staff at Hamilton General Hospital ICU for their outstanding kindness and care. Marilyn will be interred at Mount Hope Cemetery, Brighton, on Saturday, October 23, 2021, in a graveside service for family and friends at 2:30 p.m. If you wish to make a gift in her memory, we encourage you to donate to your community hospital in honour of Marilyn’s lifelong career in health care, or to your favourite charity.
