Maria’s Obituary
GIANCANI, Maria
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Maria Giancani at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Thursday, April 29 at the age of 91. Predeceased by her loving husband Calogero , her parents Antonio and Adelina Puma, and her parents-in-law Tommaso and Alfonsa Giancani. Adoring mother of Florence and Marty Rosato, Arlene and Michael Maurizio, Rose and John Di Francesco, and Tom and Bonnie Giancani. Devoted Nonna to Matthew and Laura Rosato, David and Marisa Rosato, Jessica Cooper, Johnny Maurizio, Dante Di Francesco, Charlie Giancani and Hope Giancani. Loving Bisnonna to Amelia, Stefan, Samuel, William, Cressida and Aria. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Salvina and Leonardo Morreale of Germany, and sister of the late Salvatore Puma. Dear sister-in-law of the late Salvatore and the late Grazia Giancani, the late Concetta and the late Giuseppe Tirone, the late Giuseppe and the late Anna Giancani, Gioacchino and Leonarda Giancani, and the late Nicolo’ and Giuseppina Giancani. Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews in Canada, Germany and Italy. Respected cousin to relatives in the U.S.A. Maria was a dedicated, loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose passion for life inspired all those whose life she touched. Maria’s strong faith in La Madonna del Monte, Sant’ Antonio and Santa Rita helped guide her through life. Maria and Calogero went on a personal pilgrimage with their son Tom to Racalmuto, Padova and Cascia to honour them for prayers answered. In her youth, Maria led a difficult life filled with adversity during WWII but then she built a life with Calogero, the love of her life to whom she was married for 43 years before he passed. Maria emigrated to Canada from Racalmuto, Sicily in 1960 with her three little girls in tow, to join her husband and they never looked back. Maria worked at Beauty Industries, a talented seamstress who proudly designed her daughters’ clothes. Maria worked full time while raising her family, helping to achieve her Canadian Dream. Maria often reflected on the incredible ways her life changed. Maria and Calogero proudly raised their four children who together with their families gave them their greatest sense of achievement. Maria will be dearly missed. “Tutto parte del cuore”—that everything comes from the heart—will be a lesson we will carry in our hearts forever. Love you forever and always. Thank you to Dr. Alton, Dr. Boyle and the Palliative Team and the many nurses and caregivers at St. Joseph’s Continuing Complex Care for their kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Due to current restrictions, the visitation and funeral will remain private for immediate family only.
