Margaret Helen Douglas nee Gerrie 2021

Passed away peacefully on December 3, 2021 at 94, following a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, F.J. Ted Douglas, and their three children, Margaret Anne “Peg” (Bob) Perry of Toronto, Robert Andrew Douglas (Christine Robson) of Windsor, and Mary Alice Guthrie of Amherstburg. Margaret and Ted have five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving is Margaret’s sister-in-law Helen Smith of London.
Margaret was a warm, outgoing person who put the needs of her family, friends, and neighbours first. She quietly supported her husband’s remarkable career in newspaper journalism. She encouraged her children and provided the freedom and opportunities for them to pursue their dreams. She had a keen awareness of current events. She was an independent woman who never held a driver’s license. She was an accomplished knitter for decades. She had the sharp wit of a Hebridean Scot.
Born in Detroit, Margaret attended Wayne University before it became Wayne State University, graduating in 1949 as a medical technologist. Following graduation, she worked at the American Red Cross Blood Bank in Detroit.
In 1950, Margaret moved to Windsor when she and Ted married. With her children in school, she returned to work at the Detroit blood bank for several years.
Throughout her adult years, Margaret made many contributions to her community. She was active in programs and projects at Paulin Memorial Church and was a volunteer in the Victorian Order of Nurses Meals on Wheels program for more than 25 years. She co-managed (with Ted) the Goodfellows Club school breakfast program for 15 years.
In her later years, she took an interest in the educational program of the Canadian Aviation Museum (CAM) at Windsor International Airport. She and her family are sponsoring the construction of a half-scale model of Alexander Graham Bell’s Silver Dart, the first aircraft to achieve powered flight in Canada. Margaret’s vision was that the model will serve as a teaching tool, and will be an example of the contributions made to Canadian aviation by women such as Mabel Bell.
Funeral services are private. Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Hospice of Windsor and Es County, the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation, the Canadian Aviation Museum, the Goodfellows Club, or charity of your choice.
