It is with sadness the family of Mae Weldon announces her passing on September 18, 2021.
Mae passed away peacefully at Bridlewood Manor surrounded by her family at age 89. Loving wife of John (Jack) Weldon of 68 years. Cherished mom of Mark Weldon (Kelly). Nana of her only grandchild, Parker Weldon. Survived by her younger brother Torrence McDonnell and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, Archie and Grace McDonnell, brother Bob McDonnell and her sister in laws Dorothy and Margaret McDonnell and Barbara Coote. Mae will forever be remembered by many special friends and the Mitten family (John and Peggy).
Mae and her family moved from Pennsylvania to the Toledo area in 1940 during WW2. Her parents farmed to support their family and Mae attended school in Toledo. Times were difficult and challenging, but her family worked hard, and her mom and dad worked the farm with a team of horses and sold their produce at the market in Smiths Falls to support their 3 children. Mae graduated from school and completed her nursing at the Grace Hospital in Ottawa. Upon graduation, she was hired by the public hospital in Smiths Falls. Mae nursed until 1990 when she retired, both as Head Nurse of Maturity at the Public hospital and then as a charge nurse on Maturity at the Smiths Falls Community Hospital, North Unit.
In 1953, she married the love of her life, Jack Weldon. They purchased a farm in Toledo and they both worked and farmed at the same time. On the birth of their only son, they sold the farm in 1968 and built their new home in the village, raising their family and living in their home until 2008. On the birth of their only grandson, Parker, they sold their family home of 40 years and moved to their new bungalow in Brockville so they could be near her family. Mae loved to devote her time to her husband and her family, contributing to her Church in Toledo, and her joy of gardening, cooking and baking. She especially loved to make breakfast for her Parker prior to Bumpa (Jack) walking him to the bus stop. After school, Bumpa would meet Parker at the bus stop and Nana would prepare the perfect snack, read a story or book with him and tell him he was her boy. She would talk of the countless times she held him in her arms and sing “Go to Sleep My Little Buckaroo”. Parker always said Nana made the best spaghetti. Mae and Jack loved to trailer, boat, camp and they enjoyed many trips on the Rideau and St. Lawrence Seaway, south to Florida, Las Vegas and Mexico in their retirement.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Bridlewood Manor, Bayshore Health, the South East Local Health Integration Network and Dr. Ashe for their dedication and compassionate care. Mae would never say goodbye, just ‘goodbye for now’. “Remember me in your hearts, in your thoughts, and the memories of the times we loved. For if you always think of me, I will have never gone.”
