Lucinda Stuart Morton

Cindy Stuart Morton Mofford died peacefully on April 16th, 2021, at home, surrounded by her family. She was 71 years old.
Cindy was born in Montreal and was predeceased by her parents Lucille Molson Sharp and James Nelson Morton. She is survived by her husband Ian, her son David, bothers Derek and Peter (Micki), sister Jill, nieces and nephews, Jeffery, Katie, Alex, Tory and Nicolas and her goddaughter Krystle.
Cindy completed her education at Kings Hall Compton and Brillantmont International School where she majored in fun and friends, after which she embarked on a life well-travelled.
In the late 60’s she explored Europe with 2 girlfriends in a VW camper van. For the Boomer generation this was considered a Rite of Passage at the time. She lived in the Laurentians for a time with friends, teaching skiing, tending bar and creating lifelong bonds with the people she met.
Through friends, along with Cindy’s strength as a communicator and her ability to believe she could do just about anything, she landed a job on her first film set. This was the beginning of an exciting career in the film industry. She lived in Los Angeles for many years and at one point lived in the guest cottage of the Consul General of Canada, who also happened to be her godmother, Joan Winser. They used to organize annual Oscar parties and invite the who’s who of LA and lots of well-known Canadians..… Christopher Plummer was one of their favorites. This tradition continued when she moved back to Montreal but sadly the guests were not as star studded!
While in LA, Cindy worked as the assistant to Suzanne De Passe who was President of Motown Productions. It was a thrilling experience being surrounded by names such as Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson and Diana Ross to name a few. She was a natural and was able to deal with high stress situations and people, with her usual humor and casual style. Cindy moved to Toronto in the 80’s and continued to work in the industry as an assistant to the producer, Don Carmody. They would remain lifelong friends. She worked on memorable films such as Porky’s, Weekend at Bernie’s, A Christmas Story and many others. It was in Toronto on a blind date that Cindy met her husband, Ian Mofford, the wide receiver and running-back for The Montreal Alouettes football team. Their son David was born soon after.
Family life in the film industry was not easy and Cindy left it behind in the 90’s and the family moved to Maine and then Boston and finally landed in Vermont as David’s love of ski racing took over the family’s weekends and their family life. David was admitted to Green Mountain Valley School, known for developing international ski racers, in Waitsfield, Vermont. David’s racing career at GMVS took the family on competitive ski racing trips to Europe and abroad. Cindy continued her career in the Development Office at GMVS.
Cindy and Ian decided to move back to Montreal in 2013 to be close to both their families and friends, while David moved on to University and a successful working life in NYC. Cindy continued her career in the Advancement Office at Selwyn House School, a job she loved until retirement, in September 2020, and where she continued to foster new friendships as well as reconnect with old friends.
Cindy’s gift was her ease, ability and incredible joy in talking to people, young and old. She made it look so effortless and people were drawn in. She has kept the friends she has made over the years, close to her, and makes every effort to keep in touch with all of them, no matter where they live. Her love of life, travel, wine, friends, wine and her family were apparent in everything she did. Her cancer diagnosis in 2017 made those things on her bucket list even more important. Spending time with David and Ian and traveling were her top priority. The three of them went on safari in Africa in 2018, a trip that will be a cherished memory always. A river boat cruise in Europe with friends was another fabulous experience the year after. David and she spoke daily, sometimes many times a day, as they had a special bond that never wavered. Her family and friends were everything to her. Thank you for being you Cindy, enriching our lives with your generosity of spirit and love of life, you will be so missed by your family and friends.
A huge and heartfelt thanks to Malou, for her care and loving at the end of Cindy’s life, we could not have survived without her. The CLSC palliative & NOVA care nurses and doctor for their unwavering support and professionalism. To Dr. Owen, Dr. Kopek, Dr. Mulder and Dr. Borod, as well as all the staff at the MUHC Cedars Cancer Unit for their kindness and care over the years.
Due to Pandemic restrictions a private funeral will be held on Friday, May 28, 2021 at 11am at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex.
