Lorna Lamers (née Lough) was born in Regina, SK to parents Robert and Eva Lough. Being the eldest of 7 children, she began at an early age to help with household chores and childcare duties. This led to very close relationships with her siblings. Growing up, the family lived in many small Saskatchewan towns, where her parents worked as a teacher and a school principal.
In 1951 Lorna graduated from high school in Stoughton, SK. Following her father’s wishes she accepted a scholarship to McGill University in Montreal, QC, to train as a physiotherapist. It was with great apprehension that she, a young girl from small-town Saskatchewan, boarded a bus that autumn to begin the adventure.
Lorna graduated from McGill in 1954, having made many lifelong memories and friends during her university years. She returned to Saskatchewan, where she began her first job at the Regina General Hospital. One day she met a patient there, a young man by the name of Albert Lamers, who was recovering from back surgery. They began courting and in July 1957 they were married.
The young couple made their home on the Lamers family farm near Southey, building a new house, raising a family, and living a busy and productive life.
During this period Lorna commuted to Regina a few days a week to work in the Children’s Department at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre. Once her family was grown, Lorna continued to work there, eventually retiring after 27 years as a physiotherapist. During her career, Lorna made many lasting connections with the families of her patients.
In 1997, Albert and Lorna retired from the farm to live in Southey. They built their second new house and spent many long enjoyable hours establishing a new yard and a beautiful garden. They enjoyed this time of their life, filled with good times with friends and family. In 2014, they made the decision to move to Regina, selecting Broadway Terrace as their new home.
Lorna had many interests in life. She was an avid reader and a creative cook, and she always kept large vegetable and flower gardens. She had extensive knowledge of health and nutrition, and was always generous with her advice and ability to help people. In raising her children, she provided a lot of learning opportunities and experiences, including travel and exposure to the arts.
Lorna was predeceased by her parents Robert and Eva, brothers Edwin, Keith, and Kenneth, sister Beth Rissling, sister-in-law Connie Lough, and brothers-in-law John Chester and Mike Rissling. She is survived by her husband Albert, sons Rodney (Brenda) and Brian (Nadine), daughters Jennifer (Kerry) Werle and Laura (Joe) McGlynn, sisters Roberta Foley and Beryl Chester, brother Ian, grandchildren Cora Lamers, Emily Lamers, Carmen Woods, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Regina Pasqua Hospital Palliative Care Unit. There will be a private family Celebration of Life held at a later date.
