With deep sorrow, the family of Linda Bonin is announcing that Linda passed away peacefully at home on May 26, 2021. Linda was 63 years young and fought a brave and courageous battle against cancer. Linda was a beautiful person on the inside and out.
Linda will be deeply missed by her husband, soulmate, and high school sweetheart, Mike, of 44 years, daughters Kelly Bonin, Montreal, Lisa Bonin (Andy Townsend), Dartmouth and Arron Bonin (Jordan Yetman), Dartmouth. Her loving grandchildren, Diallo, Annaka, Jahshua, Sunjahta and Djuma (Kelly), Tess and Tate (Lisa) loved their Nana with all their hearts, as did she. She was the eldest daughter of Douglas (predeceased) and Hazel Andrews (Blakeney). She leaves behind siblings David, Michael (Lori-Ann), John, Paul (Sandy), Sharon (Mal) Peter (Carol), Heather (Clive) and an abundance of beloved extended family members.
Linda loved the peace, serenity and solitude of the cottage that she and Mike built in East Pennant. She marveled at nature, the power of the ocean and the glory of sunrises and sunsets. Watching rabbits nibbling at the grass or an osprey gilding effortlessly in the sky brought her inner-peace and strength. She found tranquility in listening to soothing Celtic instrumental music and she was also known to crank a good tune from time to time. Linda loved bouquets of wild flowers and feeling the sand between her toes. One of her greatest joys came from initiating various large family gatherings at The Camp, some of which included beach days, volleyball and Euchre tournaments, chicken cook-outs, weddings, bonfires and fireworks.
Linda’s devotion to her entire family and her three girls was unwavering. She was a rock-solid Mom and Nana who found a way to make every day extraordinary. Ever loving, caring and thoughtful, she never missed an opportunity to spend time with her family. Whether it was watching them play sports, excel at school or careers, offering sound advice or having a sympathetic ear, Linda loved them unconditionally. She made sure to remember and celebrate every special occasion, important date or holiday by giving heartfelt gifts.
While Mike was in the Military, the family traveled a lot, posted to CFB Greenwood, Borden, Shearwater, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and finally back home to Halifax. Through these challenges, Linda developed maturity, independence, organizational skills and the innate ability to lead. She could be depended upon for her loving stability through her capacity to remain connected to friends and family, regardless of distance. Linda was proud of her accomplishments and her family will be forever grateful for her.
Linda and Mike loved to travel, especially to warmer climates. Mexico and the Caribbean were her favorite winter getaway locations. Her curiosity to learn about other cultures, history and heritage made vacations extra special. Once-in-a-lifetime trips to China, Europe and Egypt left a huge impression on her.
Linda was a giver of her love, care and time. Throughout her life, she volunteered with school, church groups, Brownies, or anywhere she could make a difference. Her passion to inspire and be inspired by people led her to become a highly respected, champion field hockey coach; especially with the Nova Scotia Canada Games and Dalhousie University women’s field hockey teams.
She was a fierce competitor on the volleyball court, field hockey pitch and in every aspect of her life (family game nights were no exception!). Linda believed in fairness, honest competition and abiding by the rules. Her integrity was well respected and she valued doing the right thing.
In keeping with her wishes, Linda has been cremated and will be laid to rest in a family plot in Sambro. A celebration of her incredible life will follow when appropriate.
In her honour, a memorial bursary will be established to assist a deserving female field hockey athlete attending Dalhousie University. In lieu of flowers, Linda’s family will be collecting contributions to assist this initiative via lamb01@eastlink.ca .
Linda’s motto was to Live, Love and Laugh. She embodied each of those values with grace, dignity and love. Linda will be missed dearly, but never forgotten.
