“Don’t Weep for Me – Rejoice with Me”
Leonie Mary Williams: April 19,1929 – December 19,2021
Mrs. Leonie M. Williams (nee Wall) of Shoe Cove passed away peacefully at home embraced by the love and care of her family after a brief illness. Leonie was married to her husband of over fifty years Urban R. Williams who died in 2009. She was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Lucy Wall (nee Dinn) and her brother Terry Wall.
Leonie is mourned by seven children: Dr. Chris (Barbara) of Danville, Virginia, Urban (Elizabeth) of Shoe Cove, Kenneth (Jane) of Forest, Ontario, Andrew (Michelle) of Conception Bay South, Rodger of Stittsville, Ontario, Ann (Keith) of Harrington Harbour, Quebec and Allan (Velia) of Ottawa, Ontario.
Also left to mourn are her three sisters: Patricia O’Keefe and Dorothy O’Brien of St. John’s and Philomena Coady of Paradise; one brother Jim Wall (Marg) in Moncton, NB. Leonie had eighteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren whom she loved and cherished. She also has many nieces and nephews and their children all of whom were dear to her.
Leonie graduated from St. Agnes School in Pouch Cove and completed a Business course from Our Lady of Mercy, where she met her future husband. Leonie worked for the Department of Health until the birth of her first child. In 1966, the family purchased a business in Torbay (Hilltop Groceteria) which they operated until 1977. On selling the business, the family purchased her parent’s home in Shoe Cove. Interestingly, she was born in the same house in which she passed away.
Leonie was an active congregant of St. Agnes and St. Michael’s Parish in Pouch Cove/Flatrock. When she and Urban sold the business and Urban retired from the Provincial Government, they spent considerable time in their cabin in Cape Broyle, Newfoundland. Leonie did a lot of travelling, visiting family in both Canada and the United States.
Leonie was always very active but had been in failing health for the past several months. Despite her declining physical condition, she was her usual brilliant self until the very end. Leonie lived a full and active life and was loved and admired by all who knew her. She was a force of nature. Although the family is saddened by her departure, we will always cherish her words “don’t weep for me, rejoice with me”.
The family would like to thank Paulette Doyle (Home Health Nurse), the entire wonderful palliative care team, Bernadine Power, the staff at District Drugs, Dr. Megan Dawe, and especially her sister Mrs. Dorothy O’Brien who has been her best friend since they were children. The family appreciates Aunt Dot’s love and support of our mother.
