Obituary
It is with great sadness the family of Rev. Leander (Len) Lenfield Mills, loving husband of Marjorie (Brown) Mills, wish to announce his passing which occurred on November 3, 2021 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born in Corner Brook, NL, on June 18, 1944 to the late Ralph and Blanch (Frampton) Mills.
Prior to his ordination, Len was a teacher and served as a lay and student minister. Len was ordained by the United Church of Canada on June 1, 1977 and served the United Church for 53 years before he retired. In his 53 years of ministry, Len served as the President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Conference. He was also involved with the Church on the Presbytery level as well as giving leadership for many Church camps during his time of ministry.
Len served with the Canadian Armed Forces for seventeen years, both as a Medic and a Protestant Chaplain. Len was also a paramedic and an instructor for St. John Ambulance and was presented a Certificate of Recognition by the Governor General of Canada. He was a volunteer firefighter and served as their paramedic as well.
Len was one of the founding members of the Suicide Prevention Hot Line in Saint John, and was also a Cub and Scout Leader with Scout’s Canada.
Besides his parents, Len was predeceased by his grandson Tyler Leander and his brother Ted.
Besides his wife Marjorie, who was the love and light of his life, his confidant and greatest supporter for over fifty years, he leaves behind his son, Todd (Bonnie) Truro, NS, daughter, Lori (Dwain) Saint John, daughter, Leanne (Thayne) St. Martins, one brother, Robert (Mary Lou) Ottawa, ON, and one sister, Valerie, St. John’s, NL, six grandsons; Christopher (Michaela), Geoffrey, Zackary, Kyle, Cody, two granddaughters, Cheyanne and Courtney, and six great-granddaughters; Pailsey, Addison, Mae, Baily, Kylah, Maisie and Avery.
Visitation will take place at the Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) on Sunday, November 7th between the hours of 2-4 and 6-8pm. The Funeral Service will be held from the Fundy Chapel on Monday at 11:00 am followed by interment at Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances made to Camp Tawasi, Port Elgin, or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
Due to COVID-19 health measures placed on indoor gatherings, all those attending the service will be required to wear masks and show proof of vaccination with a piece of government issued ID.
