Laurette Smyth 2021

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Laurette Marguerite Smyth, on March 15, 2021, at Maison McCulloch Hospice at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late Raymond Smyth. Loving mother of Paul (predeceased, wife Cindy), Denise (Ted Ouwens), and Janine (John Mullock). Cherished grandmother of Raymond Croteau, Danielle Lanteigne (John Palys), Justine Smyth, Chantal Lanteigne, Ayden (David Berthelot) and Lyam Mullock (Aimee Jacques) and great-grandmother of Luna-Ray Smyth. Treasured sister of Rolande Farell, and her late siblings: Jeanette, Aurel, Lucien, Anatoline, Rita, Victor, Colette, Leo, Therese, and Jean Marie. She will be dearly missed by many family members and friends.
Born in Sturgeon Falls, Laurette moved to Port Colborne in the 50s to begin her family with Ray before making their way to Sudbury in the early 60s. A learner and maker at heart, Laurette was also a kind, devout catholic whose character and actions were guided by open curiosity, gentle attentiveness, artistic creativity, and easy sociableness. She loved her family and friends dearly, maintained lifelong connections, and readily welcomed new ones. She cherished phone calls from cousins, letters from nieces, card games with friends, and deep dives into new crafts.
Laurette enjoyed and invested in topics and interests of all kinds, and at every age. When she met and asked you how you were, you had her full attention, and she retained what was important to you. She wanted to give you her best: when she invited you for a meal, or made you a gift, you could bet she practised and refined her skills beforehand, always doing her utmost to infuse what she made with care and thoughtfulness. She would call when she knew of a television program you might like to watch, and saved newspaper clippings you might want to read. And if she thought you needed it, she would pray for you.
We would like to sincerely thank the staff of Bayshore, Home Instead, and a special thank you to all the staff who cared for Mom at the Maison McCulloch Hospice.
As per Laurette’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. An interment will be held at a future date in Sturgeon Falls. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made by cheque or online to the Maison McCulloch Hospice or the Northern Cancer Foundation. www.cooperativefuneralhome.ca
