Laurence Arthur Art Bennett April 4 1928 December 16 2021

Laurence Arthur (Art) Bennett
April 4, 1928 – December 16, 2021

Bennett, Laurence Arthur (Art) 93 of Dartmouth, passed away December 16, 2021 at Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home.
Born April 4, 1928, he was the eldest son of William and Alice (Ramsay) Bennett.
Survived by sister Mary Grant, Bridgetown, sons Laurie (Gail), Tim (Ingrid Pinette) of Dartmouth, Kevin of Halifax, and Chris (Jacinda Wagner) of Calgary AB, Grandchildren: Heather (Anthony Dolittle) of Liverpool, Holly of Dartmouth, Suzanne (Jordan Ruegg) of Edmonton, and Raymond (Adrienne Allison) of Halifax. And many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his loving wife of 51 years Shirley (Horne) Bennett, brother James, brothers-in law George Grant, Fred Horne. Sisters-in law Muriel Kenney, Eunice Corkum, Mary Pettipas and Audrey Gourlie.
Born in Clementsport NS and raised on Birmingham St. Halifax, then in Clementsport, he attended Digby High School. As a young man Art returned to Halifax where he met a lovely nurse, Shirley, at a dance. They wed in 1952 at St Andrews, Eastern Passage and resided in Eastern Passage, Cole Harbour and Dartmouth. They enjoyed travel, concerts, dancing, bowling, and socializing with The Foresters and The Olde Colony Club. Art and Shirley were lovely dancers. She passed in 2007.
Art started work at Balcom & Chittick Pharmacy in Spryfield. He worked at the Nova Scotia Hospital in the inventory and supply department until retirement. He then worked as usher at the Halifax Metro Center where he enjoyed the Mooseheads and concerts.
Art was a strong Catholic, serving with the Knights of Columbus, and as usher at Saint John XXIII and then St Thomas More. He volunteered for many charities and the VG Hospital, but closest to his heart was the Dartmouth General Hospital Auxiliary where as a founding member, he served for over 40 years. You’d find him at the lobster supper, bake sales (buying fudge), raffle seller, or as a greeter in the DGH foyer until he retired from volunteering at age 90.
At 90, Art resided with his son Laurie for a few years. As such a social person, he found the Covid restrictions hard. He missed his friends from church, visiting Sobeys or family and dining out. As his health diminished, he moved into Oakwood where he relished meeting new people, the activities, music and church services.
We wish to thank the CBI home care workers, VON and all the staff at Oakwood Terrace for the great care Art received.
Due to Covid-19 limitations, funeral services will be postponed to date to a later date. Cremation has taken place. Donations in Art’s memory may be made to Dartmouth General Hospital Auxiliary or the DGH Foundation.
