Katherine « Kay »‘s Obituary
SHAUGHNESSY, KATHERINE (KAY) MARGUERITE
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved “Aunt Kay” who passed away peacefully at her home, The Meadows, in Yarmouth, N.S. on Friday, January 29, 2021 at the age of 97.
Born in Yarmouth November 3, 1923 she was a daughter of the late Ligouri and Lena (Pothier) LeBlanc. As a young newlywed she left Yarmouth for Paris where she lived for some time, travelling with her husband throughout Europe and the Middle East, later making her home in Zurich. This shy and unassuming young woman from Yarmouth grew to become a citizen of the world, visiting new places, meeting new people, experiencing diverse cultures and customs and making friends wherever she was. She always, however, maintained her humility and openness to the simple pleasures in life – a good coffee, a hot lobster roll, a meaningful conversation. Katherine was a wonderful conversationalist and a good story teller and later, after returning to Yarmouth, she would regale family and friends with amazing stories about her adventures in faraway places.
Whether in Switzerland or in Yarmouth, Katherine’s greatest pleasure was propping a new book upon her lap and opening it to Chapter 1. Books were her first love, her closest companions from the time she was a child and over the many years of her life. It was who she was, who she had always been.
Kay cherished visits from family, especially her nieces and nephews – and our children. She loved keeping up with the changes in our lives, hearing about each of us along our life’s journey. Kay was also a woman of faith. She had her share of challenges in life and found comfort in prayer and in following Sunday Mass even if only a televised version.
Katherine was the last remaining member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by all her siblings: her eldest brother “Newspaper Joe”, Yarmouth, and Don, Halifax; sisters Ursula Neville, Halifax, Leona, Yarmouth; Rosa Deveau, Liverpool; Jill D’Eon, Yarmouth, Vivian, Montreal. and Claire, Yarmouth.
Katherine is survived by nieces and nephews, Leona Coburn and Jeanne (Brenda) LeBlanc, Halifax; Carolanne Hatt and Sandra Whynot, Liverpool; Michael (Dorothea) and Peter LeBlanc, Halifax; Michelle (Rick) Crouse, Bridgewater; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Katherine will be missed by so many, and especially by her long time and dear friend Rose, who did so much for her and with her over the years.
Katherine made many friends during her stay at The Meadows – people like Karen, Hope and Doris who made her life easier and who offered caring and support. We would like to thank all those who made connections with Kay and who cared for her in so many ways. A special thank you to Morgan, Danielle and Beth in Recreation, to Sherisse in Physio, to nurses Wendy, Shannon and Louise– and to all the wonderful caregivers on Clover – past and present – who allowed Katherine to live her last days in dignity. We also offer our thanks to Drs. Chandler and Horton who looked after Katherine and kept us informed.
Katherine enjoyed living at The Meadows and we know that it was largely due to the people she met there and the depth of their caring.
We are deeply grateful to all of you.
Due to the Pandemic there will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass to honor Kay’s life will be held at St. Ambrose Cathedral at a later date.
Donations, if desired, can be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia or CNIB, or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made to: www.huskilson.net
