Katherine Josephine Margaret (Dickson) Cameron – 81, Truro,
passed away on Monday, May 24, 2021, at her home. Katherine was born
in the Dickson farm home in Centre Napan, New Brunswick. She was the
only daughter of MacLaughlin (Mac) and Dorothy Dickson (nee
Dickson).
Katherine attended a one room schoolhouse in Napan and then
Chatham High School from where she graduated in 1957. She graduated
from Teachers College in Fredericton, NB in 1958 and then later
received her Bachelor of Education from St. Mary’s
University. Katherine enjoyed her teaching career in Chatham (NB),
Riverview (NB) and later in Truro (NS). She was a member of Retired
Teachers Organization and Canadian Federation of University
Women.
Upon moving to Truro in 1966 she became an active member of
St. Andrew’s United Church where she was a former Sunday
school teacher and elder. Katherine was a life member of United Church
Women, having served in various positions at the local and
Presbyterial level. As a member of the Pastoral Care Team at St.
Andrew’s, she enjoyed many visits with shut-ins over the
years. Katherine enjoyed her volunteering at the Gift Shop in the
local hospital for a number of years.
She was a rug hooker. Her favourite hooking accomplishment
was of the Family home in Napan. There are three of these pieces to be
treasured by her children. Mom’s legacy will live on in her
love for family, her open door and her open heart for welcoming
friends.
Katherine was predeceased by her parents, MacLaughlin (Mac)
1990 and Dorothy (2004); her only brother, Raymond (2003) and his
wife, Velna Dickson (2017); the father of her children, Jim Cameron
(2012).
Katherine is survived by her three children, Sheila Cameron
(Merv Symes) and her children, Laura and Taylor Godfrey, Moncton, NB;
Karen Cameron (Bill Van Heyst) and her children, Sarah, Emily,
Jessica, Rebecca, MeiLing and MacLaughlin, Kitchener, Ontario; Craig
Cameron, Truro, NS. Katherine is also survived by her uncle, Harold
Dickson, Port Alberni, BC; special cousins, Harriet MacNaughton,
Evelyn Taylor and Catherine Zimmer; special niece, Nancy Dickson
McLennan, as well as a large extended family.
A memorial service will be held in St. Andrew’s
United Church, 55 King Street, Truro, NS at a later date. A graveside
service and interment will take place at the St. Stephen’s
Cemetery, Black River, NB at a later date. If so desired, donations in
memory of Katherine can be made to St. Andrew’s United
Church, 55 King Street, Truro, NS B2N 3K8, Colchester East
Hants Health Centre Foundation, 600 Abenaki Road, Truro, NS
B2N 5A1 or to St. Stephen’s Cemetery Fund, 30 Black River
Road, NB E1N 5S4.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner
Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, NS. Due to the
