Judith Lorraine Judy Lohnes 1939 2021

Obituary for
Judith Lorraine « Judy » Lohnes
LOHNES (Gates), Judith “Judy” Lorraine – Age 82, Truro, passed away with her children by her side on Tuesday, October 26, 2021. Judy was born in Inglisville, Annapolis County, NS and was the youngest of four children of the late Willis and Pearl Gates (Sanford) of Springfield, NS.
Judy worked 33 years for Maritime Tel. and Tel. in Springfield, Shelburne, Truro and finally, Halifax, retiring in 1991. During these years, she married Ted Lohnes, her husband of 60 years, and raised five amazing children: Bruce, Heather, Sherri, Kimberlee and Carla, all while managing to be actively involved as a community volunteer and in recreational sports. Judy was an active Kinette in Shelburne, she also managed the chowder luncheon for 21 years for the Colchester Hospital’s annual HUB BUB fundraiser and was a member of the Colchester Hospital Auxiliary working in the gift shop and managing the Art Exchange program at the hospital for many years. Judy’s sporting interest often mirrored her late husband, Ted’s interests, that way they would always be doing things together and they were often part of the same team. Judy was an avid curler and one of the best curling spectators. You would find her at local, national and international bonspiels cheering on the NS Teams. She also served as term President for the Truro Curling Club Day Ladies division. Judy loved to bowl, both indoors and, in later years, at the Cobequid Lawn Bowls Club in Truro, where she was a founding member. She was known to play a few late afternoon rounds of golf on a par-9 course with her family. In her spare time, Judy liked to try out new crafts and could be found making Christmas ornaments and knitted dishcloths and towels. Judy will always be remembered for her quick wit and jokester ways and someone who could carry on a conversation with anyone, anywhere. Staff in local businesses came to know Judy well and often said how much they enjoyed their friendly conversations.
During the early years, as their children were growing, Judy and Ted spent many weekends camping, first with a tent, then a travel trailer at special camping sites with family and friends and finally, at the cottage that she and Ted built in 2016. They spent every weekend possible there, along with children and grandchildren.
Judy’s pride and joy were her grandchildren whom she adored: Brendan, Richard, Courtney, Joshua, Tommy and Tyler and her two great grandchildren, Kenzie and Abigail, whom she leaves behind. Judy also leaves behind her five children, Bruce (Carolyn), Heather (Richard), Sherri (Darryl), Kimberlee (Jeff) and Carla (Rick). Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ted; her two brothers, Arnold and Donald and her infant sister, Sandra.
The Lohnes children wish to express their sincerest thanks and appreciation for the gentle, loving and respectful care provided to Mom by all the staff on 2E in the Colchester East Hants Health Center over the last few months and a special thanks to the staff at Parkland, Truro for their kind care over the last three years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Judy’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at 2:00 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with Rev. Connie Stewart officiating. Cremation has taken place with burial to be beside her beloved husband, Ted, in the Robie Street Cemetery, Truro. Live webcasting of the service will begin at 1:58pm (Atlantic Time) and is available with online condolences by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
